Split would be better, beaches and easy to get to most (day trip wise) impressive regions. Get to Waterstones and buy eyewitness travel croatia isbn 978-1-4053-4090-8

Yea but you have sun, ever been to Cres? Loved it

I live in Sarajevo now, haven't seen a sun since 2008.
Fuck off you get snow then

on daily basis, lol

Have loved it each of 5 times it came to Dubrovnik in my 27 years there. Not pretty happy chap when I see it now.

Haven't been to Cres, I wasn't really exploring Croatia too much except when I was in army, I was kinda always oriented more to Bosnia. Knew one sugar from Cres though. Sugar.

That's where I was born, just above that port.

Gruz is Dubrovnik though, the one you referring as Dubrovnik is Old Town :) City centre is from the port til Old Town + Lapad, across the port.

Split is nowhere a popular tourist destination in Croatia, more a transport centre. Some areas between Dubrovnik and Split like Makarska and small places around it are very nice for family holidays.

Young people would rather chose Zrce, it's Ibizza style island with partying day-night. That's much more to the north though - <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zr%C4%87e" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zr%C4%87e</a> or <a class="postlink" href="https://www.google.ba/search?q=zr%C4%87e&hl=en&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=zELeUMqzG8TLswaLioDgAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAA&biw=1440&bih=648" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://www.google.ba/search?q=zr%C4%87 ... 40&bih=648</a> if you are for drugs, alcohol, sex, aids and all other kind of shit (no elephant one though), that's where you'd want to go

We went there this summer and had a brilliant holiday. Stayed in Lapad about 4k ( or a 40 p bus ride!) outside Dubrovnik. Nice hotel if room was a bit basic but with stunning views over the bay, and fabulous weather. Beer, food and entertainment all reasonably priced and excellent quality. You need to check out the Old Town of Dubrovnik (people watch on the Strada) and try one of the Island tours by sea.
If you can imagine Southern Tenerife without the tackiness, that's what its like.
Don't be surprised if some of the older waiters/ taxi drivers etc don't seem to get too fussed if you have a minor drama such as lost luggage or room key etc however . They will have seen some serious shit in a fairly recent war, are all hard as nails, and will make it fairly clear that your problem needs to be kept in perspective!
Enjoy!

Lapad is still very integral part of Dubrovnik :) My house is across the bay, in Gruz, some 500m from that bridge on the city entrance.
And it's Stradun, that main street in Old Town

Dubrovnik is beautiful city, specially the historic Old Town part. It's nice for family holiday,
I'm not really sure it's perfect place for young people who are for night life and such as it's very poor in that department though there are loads of young tourists too.

It's pretty expensive for local standards, no chance in a hell local could afford himself a dinner in restaurant during tourist season. But I've spoke with lot of UK and Irish people while I was living there and they did not find it too expensive, I guess you guys have good wages over there.

Ah right. We were at Hotel Vis which I think is maybe in the next bay south of you.
Taxi driver from the airport said that Dzeko had done a charity soccer fund raiser thing for local kids which had gone down very well, which was a bit of a surprise!

Dzeko was there with Emir Spahic, Bosnian captain who was born in Dubrovnik, one of my first neighbors.

I spent all my teenage summers on Uvala Lapad beach, the (relatively) big one in that bay near the hotel Vis. And no, I'm across the big bay, just above the port, I explained it wrong as you're thinking about it from different view point than I am.

Here it is, you were just below those hills over there and my house is some 100m from this playground. There are pics with Dzeko playing football on it, lol

We stayed just up the hill from there at Dubrovnik Palace, it was great. We had 2 weeks there in Sept 2011 and would definitely go back. We even found a pub to watch the match!
