Croatia

Going to Dubrovnik in a couple of weeks, can’t wait. Never been before so any recommendations on what to do/see would be much appreciated. Also, going to be there for the Wolves game so anyone know where’s good to watch football there, preferably near the old town?

How long you there for Ric?

Just a week mate.
Was there last year and loved the place. Tips....
- Unless you are into museums the Dubrovnik pass is not great value. Its not that expensive to get on the city walls or in the interesting museums/buildings. Some of the smaller museums included in the pass are rather odd.
- Bus travel is very cheap and kids travel free.
- Its best to walk the walls either first thing in the morning or just before last entry as you will avoid all of the day trippers from the cruise liners, plus its a lot cooler. Make sure you take some water with you as the few places where you can buy them on the walls know what to charge.
- The GoT tours are ok but a bit of a rip off. If you have seen the programme its fairly easy to figure out whats what. Or alternatively just tag onto on of the other tours when you are near one of the filming locations, there are loads going around and they speak very loudly.
- As you would expect eating and drinking inside the city walls costs a premium, it is quite a bit cheaper if you walk through the city walls and out towards where the buses drop off. That said its not Rome or Paris prices even inside the walls and some of the resteraunts are great. In particular Resteraunt 360 with great views of the old harbour and fantastic food (Michellin Star but with Northern sized portions). Most of the upmarket dining places are around the harbour or rooftop.
- If you want to get out and about you can get boat trips to some of the nearby islands Kolocep, Lopud etc which are all very nice.
- Its not that far over the border to Bosnia where you can go to Mostar which was under seige during the Balkan war but has been fully restored and is very picturesque.
- You could also go into Montenegro which again is not far but it does take a long time to get across the border as it is a bit erm... corrupt... but entirely safe. Best to go on an organised tour if you go there.
- If you feel like getting fit there are lots of guided walks, sea canoeing or just have a swim in the water which is crystal clear. A word of advice however, if you have kids and they want to go in the sea it is very cold and the rocks can be quite sharp so get them some of those neoprene shoes.

Thats about it. As regards bars to watch the footy my advice would be to find a small bar and ask the owner to put it on, they are a fairly friendly bunch the Croatians and all the bars have dodgy HD IPTV.

Try get on a guided tour over to Montenegro - Kotor and Perast are a must see, beautiful scenery. Also, nearby Croatian islands of Lopud, Koločep and Šipan, all worth a visit.

I stayed in Cavtat which is just across the bay from Dubrovnik, I'd highly recommend getting the boat over there one evening for a family meal, the boat takes around 30-40 mins. Loads of nice restaurants and a beautiful harbour in Cavtat, just turn right when you get off the boat and keep walking. Would go back there in a heartbeat and it is loads cheaper and quieter than Dubrovnik.

Just got back from Croatia, although our villa was just outside Split rather than Dubrovnik. And yes, as above, other than the old town which is absolutely stunning I can confirm that Split is a shithole. Some awesome restaurants thoughif you do your research.

My kids did the zip lining in the Cetina canyon which was incredible.

There are some stunning little villages to visit too.

Price wise it wasn’t bad, not cheap, but certainly not expensive.

Obvious one is the cable car for the views of the old town below.

At the top though there is a museum that doesn’t look much but costs a couple of quid in and is worth an hour of your time. If you go towards the end of your stay you will be able to see bars you have sat at being bombed to fuck on the footage.

Agree with all of this. Plus Cavtat which is only a 20 minute bus ride away. Didn't quite get Mostar and the bridge myself but the Kravice Waterfalls (traditional stopping point en route) were superb. A week is ideal @Ric and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Close by position, Slovenia is also very nice, the Triglav mountain area is stunning
