Agreed last year was brilliant - I am looking forward to the trip but not the cold weather. We went in a local bar circa £2pint and £15k for a litre of Vodka in the bar - stayed in hostel £20 per night - return flight was £114 from memory - visa circa £110 via courier service - agreed with other posts - city is really nice but be on your guard - had great trip round the city thanks to Greenie

Why on your guard...been thinking of this one but have this impression that Moscow is a shit hole with shit house people

its all opinion of course but to say its a shithole is way off the mark. the russians we met were great and the city is just awesome.

most sensible post you have ever made, couldnt agree more.

When you walk around at night after a few beers like in most cities you get people hanging round. You are in a foreign country and not so many speak English so you stand out. So I suggest you would be on your guard. Some of the roads are really wide so you have to use the underpass to cross the road. After beers / vodka walking down under a road in an unfamiliar place when you don't speak the lingo etc.... I was not trying to put you off - I had a brilliant time - its just common sense. Walking round with your City shirt on singing blue moon might not be the best plan !

We had absolutely no trouble there, partly due to Alex's help but also whenever you go to a large city, beware.
But I found the place a little soulless and, apart from Red Square, lacking in character. Had we have stayed a few more days I may have taken the time to discover a bit more of its unusual aspects.

Not much in it mate

Red Square is great
Because we only went for a couple of days I did no research about the less glamorous things to see and do.
De niro was there for four days so may have seen more
But in one morning we went to the catholic cathedral, walked along the river, tried to get in the Kremlin, went to see Lenin, but he was dead, went in St Basil's and the GUM store. Then took a trek to the 'tourist' area and went in the hard rock. Finally stopped for a few neat vodkas before heading out to the airport.
It's easy to get around but just a little dull, IMHO.

Looking forward to Rome, but now wish I'd booked an extra day.

Wednesday and Thursday
But as soon as I'd booked the flights I wish I'd gone on the Tuesday, Rome is my third favourite city, so much to see and always just round the corner, great bars and cafes
