You need invitation letter to apply for visa. The hotel/travel agency/company/person who gives you invitation is acting as your host providing the accommodation for you. You just put their name into visa application form.

Practically some travel agencies can provide you invitation letter without accommodation. You only pay for invitation letter fee. In this case you still need to put their company name into visa application form. And when you arrive Moscow you can go to other travel agency and pay money for them to register your visa. You can contact Russia travel agency from internet and pay money on-line for so called invitation letter but please note it normally take 3 - 10 days for invitation via internet. So it would be easier if you can find UK travel agency who you can leave your passport and they sort out visa for you.

Regarding visa register, If you stay in hotel, hotel can register your visa when you check in.

In any case, you don't have to register your visa if you stay less than 72 hours.

Please re-check from net, I am just a traveler been in Russia few times.

Use Travel Direct for the visa application - they give you the name of the sponsor and code - the woman on the phone told me the letter of introduction you will get is sufficient. Even if you only put Moscow on the application you are free to travel anywhere - even if the game gets moved

It is two options
1) Find invitation letter, submit along with Visa Application = you pay for invitation + administration fee + time to go to submit by yourself.
2) Full service by tavel agency = pay to them and they do whole process.

Visa is valid to go anywhere in Russia
BUT, if you stay more than 3 days you need to register visa and when you move to new city you need old visa to be registered again in new city for just in case police stop you to check you visa, it is the law you need to register within 3 days in any city you stay for KGB to know who is your host, Mr. Bond LOL

I learn these when travel in other old USSR, actually my nationality can stay 30 days without visa in Russia.

Thomas cook are not doing a chartered flight for it, they are putting the customers on schedule flights via Heathrow, do not know exact numbers at the moment but was told only twelve had booked up to last Saturday.

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

I understand FSF have a representative out in Moscow and the pitch will be inspected tomorrow. As soon as i know more, will post it on here (apologies if it has already been mentioned elsewehere). #pray4khimki

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

well theres 4 of us going via helsinki ,stopping 2nights in a Holiday Inn "near" red square, all booked just waiting for our visa's to come back

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

Looking more favourable for the game to be at Arena Khimki now. Part of pitch relaid following UEFA inspection today. City confident it will be played there according to Daily Mirror report below

Manchester City's Champions League game against CSKA set to take place in Moscow despite concerns over pitch

Manchester City's Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow is set to go ahead in the Russian capital.

UEFA have been inspecting CSKA's pitch at the Arena Khimki after the Russian side had to shift their last Group D game against Viktoria Plzen to St Petersburg.

CSKA have had to resurface part of the pitch and UEFA have given them more time to allow the new turf to take ahead of the City game on October 23.

City expect the match to go ahead in Moscow and hope to receive confirmation from UEFA by the end of the week.

Manuel Pellegrini's side sit second in Group D, level on points with CSKA and three points adrift of leaders

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

Not the easiest ground to get to from the city centre but by far the best of a desperate bunch that includes St. Petersburg and Krasnodar.

From the centre it's Metro Line 2 to the end and then the 345 bus (or taxi).

Bear in mind the 345 is only a minibus (marshrutka) and there will be plenty of CSKA supporters taking the same route from central Moscow - you could get the 851 airport bus and get off at the big shopping centre and walk 10 minutes or so to the ground. A train from Moscow to Khimki station and a short walk may work out to be quicker.

I land at Sheremetyevo on the day and have decided against travelling in to Moscow as we'll only have an hour or so in central Moscow before having to turn round and travel back to Khimki. The problem with this is that there seems to be absolutely nothing to do in Khimki - no bars, no pubs, no restaurants and probably about 4 hours to kick-off , the highlight - a MacDonalds. Looks like we'll be drinking vodka in the park with the locals

Thanks for the advice. From where do you get the 851? I'm not sure where the Moscow Railway Station is in relation to our hotel but if it's a case of hopping on the train and then a short walk then clearly this is much more preferable than metro/buses/marshrutka.

Surely there must be a pub close to Khimki? Around the shopping centre, perhaps?

If you are in central Moscow go to Komsomolskaya Metro ( Red Line No1 or Brown Line No5). Leningradskaya Train Station is right next door. Trains to Khimiki go from here. The stadium is then a ten minute walk. I've not seen a timetable so don't know what time they run after the match.

The supporter information leaflet City sent with the tickets says you should go to Kiyevsky station - this is wrong, trains from here go in completely the wrong direction, towards the Ukraine.

The 851 is the shuttle bus from Rechnoy Vokzal (the metro station at the end of Line 2 (the green one)) to Sheremetyevo airport. It goes up the main highway through Kimki and there is a stop at the Shopping Centre (Butakovo). From here it's ten minute walk to the ground. These are full size buses and run until about 2 in the morning. This is what I'm going to be using.

If you can get on a 345, that's perfect it goes from Rechnoy Vokzal Metro and stops right outside the ground, next to the stand we are in. Coming back could be a problem. I've got a 345 timetable (in Russian) and if I'm reading it correctly (through Google Translate) there are only 2 scheduled (mini)buses after the match at 22.43 and 22.49. They may put extra buses on for the locals after the match, but these could be gone by the time they let us out. Taxis are an option but how available and what cost will they be after the match?

The pub situation around the ground is grim - believe me I've been doing my research.

Good luck - It's all part of the adventure.

Anyone in the know want to suggest a few waterholes to meet up at? big place they say!!

This place has been recommended by a local on another site:

SMall Pub. The SM stands for Spartac Moscow, it's their Number1 pub. Apparently we will get a good welcome there because we are against CSKA. It's near Prospect Mira Metro Station.

From their web site - SMall Pub - avowed place to meet and network number 1 for all fans of "Spartacus" and not only, as well as fans of football and sport in general! We are the oldest Spartak bar, with a June 6, 2006.

Oh and this young lass works there.

Take a bow, this is excellent information.

We're staying about three minutes from Kitay Gorod metro station, so for us it will probably be a case of heading up to Leningradskiy station on Wednesday afternoon. Once we've sussed out which train to get to Khimki (and hopefully back), a short walk to SMall Pub for afternoon festivities looks viable. If it isn't possible to return on the train then it will be the 851 back to Rechnoy Vokzal. I'll be carrying a map and metro map so we should be well-equipped to improvise if need be.

Cheers for the advice, I've done a bit of research myself but not come up with as detailed answers as yourself. How life would be that much simpler if the metro ran to Khimki.

i'm not a fan of this place. pretty easy to get in a trouble there.

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

For anyone getting the train from central Moscow, Leningradskiy station to Khimki.

The trains are pretty frequent and it takes about 25 minutes. If you want get to Khimki an hour or two before kick-off.

Leningradsky 17.20 - Khimki 17.43
Leningradsky 17.31 - Khimki 17.56
Leningradsky 17.41 - Khimki 18.04
Leningradsky 17.47 - Khimki 18.14
Leningradsky 18.15 - Khimki 18.41
Leningradsky 18.21 - Khimki 18.47

Obviously there are trains before and after.

After the match there are 2 trains

Khimki 22.29 - Leningradsky 22.58 - should be OK if we get locked in for less than 20 mins
Khimki 23.11 - Leningradsky 23.42 - loads of time to get this.

Re: CSKA Moscow v City (Wednesday 23 October)

3 passports with visas received today from Travel Direct, bang on time, as they advertised, good service! (not the cheapest but they were happy to help and correct where forms weren't correctly completed etc). Just need the game to be confirmed as Khimki now, and our flights to land on time etc, looking forward to it....ctwd
