Cycling Advice

The huddling in the pub bit has just made laugh, a group of us did C2C in a day a while back, we had the full four seasons in a day weather and were huddled behind a road sigh to get out of driving hailstones in the middle of nowhere between Allendale and Corby, it was hideous.

last year in Majorca we went out on a big day ride in full brilliant sunshine with and I have to be honest not even a gilet between us, we were at one point in foil recovery blankets huddled around a wood burning stove in a cafe at the top of one of the Cols wondering just how the fuck we going to get back to the resort as it was still pissing it down the temp had dropped from 28 to 11 and we had a high speed descent on roads like glass, lucky for us three kind Canadian lads who were just driving about took pity and lent us some jackets as they were staying in the same resort, now I am a decent descender but I was scared shitless on the way back.

Another lesson learnt the hard way on the bike.

Ha! Ha! We¨ve all had those days.
I did Ventoux a few years ago and didn¨t heed the locals advice to take something extra to wear for the descent as it would be cold and windy at the peak. Fucking hell, they weren¨t wrong! Shaking like a shitting dog at the top, a kindly gent lent me a pair of arm warmers.
For truly apocalyptic weather check out Hinault¨s 1980 Liege-Bastogne-Liege win. He is one tough bastard.

Come down that service rd from chew with a pal oneday and his front facia plate on his stem had cracked in two, he had to ride back to the etihad with the bars de-pressed into the stem to keep the design together, good upper body workout..We was doing plenty then and didnt think too much about it,

We'd regular have it in summer from the etihad- daisy nook-hartshead-dovestone-over the moor- holmfirth (beans on toast) up holmes down woodhead- devils elbow- glossop straight thru to hadfield- buxton..then get a wager going who could hit 50mph down the long hill..peak forrest..ashton canal and etihad...not a bad run on 26inch steel full rigid 22lb rig...heart at 41/42. Miss it terribly, had problems with me psoas for 3yrs finally nailed it just about now but being well into me 50s cant get them 3yrs back.

How far is all that in total mate? Sounds a great ride.

Never had a clock on a bike, we used to simply slow heart beat it till the body was tripping and then whatever happened, used to get some sarky comments from roadies and so change route and talk them thru their ride...ended up in burnley one sunday mythering a pair of roadies how much they paid for their lycra.( they were sorry theyd spoke)..once your trilpping youre not in a rush to stop.

Town- ancoats street--rochdale canal- littleborough- ebdon- sowerby huddersfield- marsden- oldham daisy nook- ashton new rd- town....or slide off past marsden down to diggle and pick the ashton canal up straight back down to ancoats

This isn’t on a road bike is it? The canal toepath isn’t ideal for road bikes surely?

I wouldnt dream of riding a road bike, i can 20mph mean average my own bike on roads and go anywhere else...

Having riden a road bike many years ago (albeit not a fragile as today's finely tuned carbon masterpiece's) they really don't like anything but paved/tarmac surfaces. My biggest ever crash was on gravel on my old Dawes 5-speed. I've still got the scars.

My hybrid is pretty good on the road, but obviously nowhere near your archetypal road bike. That said I have no issue rattling along at 18-20mph on the flat and thanks to the 38mm road tyres at 40psi it eats up gravel and cinder paths with ease. Not so much in the wet but I've got plenty of clearance to fit knobbly tyres if I ever wanted to.

If I had the money I would definately trade it in for a gravel bike, but I'm just happy to be out riding again.
