Cycling Advice

That’s virtually 100km isn’t it? My longest rides have been about 105km taking between 4 and 5 hours depending on terrain, and I would normally have to stop at some point to buy a couple of cans of coke, as the water bottle would easily get used up in first 2 hours in the summer.
One thing I have found is I get sick of eating energy bars / gels so I’ve started stuffing a cheese sarnie in the back pocket to vary things a bit. To have something non-sweet to eat after 3 hours or so tastes so good!
Peanut butter and jam on toast, make it like a sandwich and then cut into soldiers, easy to eat one at a time, get a proper cycling jersey so you’ve stuff easily at hand, always also take a protein shake in my pocket plus 2 bottles of water on the bike, also gels, choc and a banana. Better to take too much.

lol, as a student when I had no cash, I lived off 2 meals basically; either porridge and a multivitamin tablet, or peanut butter & raspberry jam on toast! Could get a bit messy on the bike though, but I’ll give it a go.

Yeah, I wear cycling jerseys stuffed to the gills, but I need to sort out the water situation - I have one holder on the vertical seat bar, but diagonal bar holder is used for a small pump, rather than a drinks holder. Any advice? I’m guessing I could buy something to strap the pump on to the underside of the horizontal top bar of the frame??

Beats sitting in traffic, I sometimes ride to work and back, Macclesfield from north manchester and it only takes 10 minutes longer on the bike roughly!!?
I've done a couple if dry runs and it works out about 5 - 10 minutes slower on the bike. For me it's more getting up early enough to have my breakfast so that I'm not throwing up half way to work.

Regularly clean and lubricate your chain, and make sure your pivot points on your front/rear derailleur are lubricated. That should keep your drivetrain tip-top, and prevent chain issues. Last thing you want is your chain giving way as you push down hard on the peddles. Also clean and lubricate your brake/gear cables where they meet the cable outer to keep them running freely.

Always wipe off any excess oil as it will attract grit and dirt.

GCN have loads of videos on the subject.

Ta mate! I’ve cleaned the handlebars and wheels but didn’t want to touch the chain or breaks in case I got rid of grease that was needed. I’ll give that’s good watch.

You can get a mini pump and holder that fits under your bottle cage, but you might need slightly longer screws.

You really need to keep on top of your chain. If you don't clean it regularly it gets full of dirt which mixes with the lubricant and turns into grinding paste. This will not only significantly reduce the life of your chain but also wear out your gear cogs much faster.

When Steve Cummings rode in Italy (think he was at Barloworld) they said he couldn¨t take ANY food if the ride was under SIX hours. He was allowed an espresso during the ride.

I did 56 miles yesterday up and around Siddingto so pretty flat but bastard headwind most of the ride. Any ¨marginal gains¨ were quickly undone with the cans of San Miguel / bottle of red and mountain of paella I had as ¨recovery¨ food. Leaving it late today, heading out to Brickworks at half six when traffic should be quieter. On the question of resting heart rate, 55bpm is cracking for anyone over 40. Im 52 and have a resting rate that fluctuates between 53 and 61. Big MIg, so the legend goes, had one of twentyfucking8. Lungs like a fucking whale. And possibly, ahem, one or two other things that ¨helped¨.
