Cycling Advice

I presume you did the edge first and then dropped into Sowerby bridge then back around to do Cragg Vale as it’s the only way I think off doing that. Great Ave btw what rig are you riding?
I remember going up Blackstone Edge to see the TdF. Stopped about halfway up (to admire the view of course) and turned around to see a small child about 4 or 5 year old pedalling up on a small trike happy as larry. Of course I'd done 20 miles to get there, that was my excuse.

I couldn't tell you.

At a guess i would say cable disc
The rim brakes are the old type, two blocks either side of the wheel rim that clamp together to slow the bike down - aka V brakes. Disc brakes will be identifiable because there will be a metal disc (a bit like a cog without the teeth) attached to the wheels in the centre and the braking action is made on these discs.

I've only ever used my Mountain Bike for going on the odd Mountain Bike trail every year, which is brilliant. However, during lockdown and have the inability to get fit at home due to the kids, i have been going on rides. Reminded me a bit of being a kid and just going out with your mates on long bike rides and not coming back for hours. I've found places i never knew existed, which is a bit sad tbh, but it's been great and i've put in some good miles. However, i do wish i had an easier bike to ride on the paths as it's so annoying peddling like a fucker to catch some speed on the mountain bike but getting overtaken by some nobhead on a roadbike who's hardly even peddling. I'm even considering taking my bike with me to work, when it opens again, and going on some rides around there.
I could have written this exact message for myself

The best advice I can give anyone re Cycling is don’t use Evans, the retailer owned by Mike Ashley. Sent an evoucher purchased from Evans yesterday for my lads birthday and it has disappeared into the ether. Maybe these things happen but they have closed their customer service call centres, web chat is currently off line and has been for the last 24 hours so the only way of contacting them is by email. An automated message says they will do their best to respond within 10 - 14 days. Be warned.

Did 45 miles on Monday morning including climbing Blackstone edge then Cragg vale.... averaging 14.2 miles per hour over the whole ride, going out again tomorrow towards Buxton way for a change, doing roughly 50 miles or so. Love being out on it on the road but reading other stuff on here I’m tempted to buy a mountain bike and do some off road cycling too.
Mate. Get yourself a mountain bike and do the Everest in a month challenge. I just did it in May. Have to climb 8,848 metres. Cracking challenge which 4 of us did.

Sounds like you're getting a passion for speed! If you need to be faster and can afford it, buy a decent road bike and have two bikes; one for off-road and one for roads/commuting. I had a mountain bike and commuting avg speed was around 13mph via trails and a bit of road but I then bought a hybrid with the hope I could ride both surfaces. The hard case tyres shredded quickly so ended up just using it on the roads. Luckily it was light and had no suspension so got decent avg speeds out of around 15mph. Not bad for an ageing asthmatic.

Disc brakes use a disk on the side of the hub as below. The cheap ones are rubbish as they lose effectiveness quite dramatically, you have to constantly tinker with them to keep them functioning and even then they are not great, they get to a point where they are basically non functional. You can service them with new pads, disks and new cables to get them back to working almost like new but you money is better spent on decent ones.

Lots of people are migrating back to rim brakes due the issues with discs. Pad attrition and cost the main drivers....
