Cycling - hints, tips and routes

I have just fitted some cleats to my road bike after years of using toeclips. Holy Jesus! The difference it makes is unbelievable. Most cyclist will have been using them for years but I've finally changed over.

Decathalon are selling Shimano SPD mountain bike clips for £20. The advantage with MTB pedals is you can walk about in the shoes easily unlike road shoes. They were dead easy to fit, about 10 minutes max. I only had to buy a 15mm spanner. I'm adjusting the tension right at the moment. To tight and it's hard to get your feet out quickly.

Pre clips my rides averaged about 12 mph but went out earlier on the A6 and Strines brew about averaged 14.5 mph according to Strava.

If you haven't got them, give them a go.

I am a complete bike novice but did a ride for charity a month or so back and enjoyed the training - borrowed everything (as I wasn't going to get kitted out without knowing whether I enjoyed it or not).

Anyways, I am probably going to look at another ride for charity over a further distance and you guys may have covered it in thread but could someone recommend a road bike?

Most likely look for used (but in good nick) probably would look to spend a few hundred on it (if that's enough)?

I haven't heard of Cragg Vale, I'll Google it. Thanks for the tip.

Rode up blackstone edge and down cragg vale then back again few months ago, fucking brilliant flying down either side, did this on my old cyclocross bike but may do it again soon on my new focus road bike. Went out on it for the first time last week and the difference is remarkable. Rode up hunters hill in Wigan as part of a mini Duathlon, don’t think I’d have got up it on my old bike!!

Road bikes aren't cheap, I bought mine second hand from a bike shop. Decathalon bike are quite well rated. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-359113-road-bikes/T-69558_66690

Don't forget to ride on the pavement when there are pedestrians about

And always cycle through red lights regardless of other traffic about

Until you manage these two things you can never call yourself a cyclist......

..... Other than that I hope you enjoy yourself. Some great places in the North West

You forgot. Tell him to find someone to join him on his bike rides. They can then cycle two abreast on narrow roads at 10 miles an hour. I`m sure the half mile tail back of traffic full of people who have to be somewhere wont mind while you have a little chat with your peddle buddy

Or he could drive and use his phone at the same time and knock another cyclist of his bike. Knobs on both sides mate.

Just finished a 62 mile ride with 4500 ft climbing took in a bit of rippey road left at the turnpike pub and over to blackstone edge, decent headwind on the way back to the velo made it very interesting, hope it’s not the last of the decent weather

Anyone used that Farmer John's place in Marple?

Really like this thread. Anyone itching to get started again?

I'm still a beginner got a mtb last year, looking to get out loads this year. Definitely a few routes on here I'd like to try.

I am, but tbh normally wait till the Euro road season starts in March to get my inspiration. Normally go into cycling hibernation Nov - Feb and just stick to running instead. If you get chance have a look at the Strade Bianchi race 9 March, very tasty.

And of course as well as the TdY in May, we’ve got the World Champs in Yorkshire in September!
