Damned united

a brilliant football film although Cloughie ruined football with his wages for Dave McKay and again later on when he bought Peter Shilton for Forest. He basically bought success by bringing in great players like Trevor Francis too and we all know how wrong that is... ;-)

Seriously we will never see his like again unfortunately. Two European Cups on the trot and league titles for different newly promoted teams makes him one of the very best if not THE very best.

The players that Revie for England had at his disposal were outstanding, its often forgotten that the TEAM he built were also outstanding. Revie's midfield was Ball, Terry Francis and Colin Bell.

It had everything, it was also when Keegan was coming into his pomp. The problem for England was that he didn't just lose one of them, he lost all three of them. Bell and Francis were injured, Ball fell out with Revie.

None of the players at the time, really had the right attitude, they were also ALL flawed, the Glamour names of the era.None would not have survived under Clough either.

If you look at the career stats, of the Stars, they never won anything either.

Worthington, Bowles, Marsh, Currie, MacDonald and many others.

Not picking Alan Hudson and Charlie George was a Revie's mistake, as they were winners. But they were also deeply flawed and untrusted.

I don't agree that the problem was the attitude of the players. The problem was that Revie was incapable of getting the best out of talented players. Clough would have picked them AND got the best out of them. If he could get the best out of John Robertson, he could get the best out of anyone!

It's a bit harsh to suggest that the players concerned 'never won anything'. Liverpool were dominating the domestic game at the time, so if you weren't playing for Liverpool chances are you didn't win anything. QPR finished runners-up when Stan Bowles was playing for them. Malcolm MacDonald and Newcastle got to an F.A. Cup final in 1974 when that competition was still a very big deal. Frank Worthington was the top scorer in the old First Division in 1978/79 when he was at Bolton, beating the likes of Kenny Dalglish, etc.
