Dani Alves

You have to admit "Walker+Alves (on a free)" is much better than "Walker+ Nobody, or maybe Fernandinho filling in."
Yes, I am super psyched at the price. So I can't hate this acquisition as it has no downside really. Even if he turns out to not be as good.

Schweinsteiger had been one of the best midfielders in the world prior to United signing him on a free.

I'll reiterate once again. Good squad player, high risk signing as a first choice.

You are right Schweinsteiger had been one of the best in the world but he was a busted flush way before Bayern let him go, he had hardly played a game in the two previous seasons. The difference with Alves is he is still one of the best right backs in the world even at 34.

If we've signed him, it's dumb, short term thinking.

As has been said, it could go well, but it's very high risk. My prediction is he's not going to look as good in our team as he did in Juve.

But it wasn't obvious to anyone whom had watched him he was finished

Dani Alves just had a top top season

Schweinsteiger was injured plagued and hardly played for Bayern before joining.
Alves played amazing last season.

Schweinsteiger had been injured for the majority of the previous 3 years, and then proceeded to spend his time at United injured.

I think the comparison is poor.
Only real comparison that I could think of, it's rare that English clubs take a punt on players of that age as they rarely work out well.

Name some 34 year olds who've come here for the first time and been an instant hit?

We we've had maicon, Weah, Mcmanaman, Fowler etc etc. A week ago I was of the same opinion. You want the best for City, and when you have a reported £300m, then it's fair to wonder whether it's the best choice. Having a go at blues for voicing a doubt which you honestly must share to an extent is not what a forum is about. It's about exchanging views and seeing which one comes out on top.

They were all finished at the highest level

Go watch the highlights of Dani Alves versus Monaco in both legs
He tore Monaco ( who people want us to buy half their team) to pieces.

One of the greatest players in the world last ten years

Maicon wasn't even the best RB at inter that was Zanteii and he was 40

It's all well and good everyone saying in hindsight that Schweinsteiger was finished. At the time that signing was universally applauded as a great bit of business for United. At the time I don't remember many people being quite so negative.

Can't believe that people won't acknowledge that a 34 year old wouldn't be a huge risk given the role as anything more than a squad player.

I'd go back even longer, 12-14 years - an absolute monster at Sevilla, never seen a more devastating threat at both ends of the pitch than Dani at Sevilla
