Nothing funnier than seeing people get upset over a word which is in incredibly wide usage and describes the function of the player perfectly.

Even funnier when it takes them 2 sentences to explain it, and then wonder why it's used.

I think it's more to do with people are having a hard time adjusting to the fact that the site is being taken over by Americans.
It's just a matter of time before it's accepted and they give up the fight.

It's the c**tish, hipster way of describing a midfielder who sits in front of the back four and can dictate play.

It's a position that's existed for about 30 years, but FIFA players like to use it to think they're smart and progressive.

What is the non-****ish term? Perhaps a DLPM?

No, because why would I use the italian word for pivot when I could just use...pivot.

I certainly wouldn't get upset by someone using regista though.

I'm also not offended by words like "inside forward" or "inverted winger". I don't use them often myself but we all know what they mean, they describe in one or 2 words something that usually take a sentence and people getting angry about them just stinks of old miserable bastards getting upset over nothing.

Pivot isn't an Americanism.

It comes from writers like Micahael Cox and Jonathan Wilson seeing that other countries have a single word which adequately explains the role instantly instead of saying something like "a defensive midfielder who controls the game" and using them in their blogs.

I suspect it's popularity on here is because it features heavily in Pep Confidential, where Pep uses it constantly, so it's an obvious term to use when describing the sole defensive midfielder in the team.
