You are right Schweinsteiger had been one of the best in the world but he was a busted flush way before Bayern let him go, he had hardly played a game in the two previous seasons. The difference with Alves is he is still one of the best right backs in the world even at 34.

Only real comparison that I could think of, it's rare that English clubs take a punt on players of that age as they rarely work out well.

We we've had maicon, Weah, Mcmanaman, Fowler etc etc. A week ago I was of the same opinion. You want the best for City, and when you have a reported £300m, then it's fair to wonder whether it's the best choice. Having a go at blues for voicing a doubt which you honestly must share to an extent is not what a forum is about. It's about exchanging views and seeing which one comes out on top.

Can't believe that people won't acknowledge that a 34 year old wouldn't be a huge risk given the role as anything more than a squad player.

I'd go back even longer, 12-14 years - an absolute monster at Sevilla, never seen a more devastating threat at both ends of the pitch than Dani at Sevilla

Also he went from a european side to a team fighting relegation, a step down no? If we were talking about Alves moving to Stoke then maybe yeah.

He'd been injury plagued for a couple of years, wasn't getting in Bayern's team and he arrived with a dad belly and grey hair, he was completely finished! Why would Bayern have let go an absolute legend of club and country for next to nothing if they thought he still had it?

Dani Alves was the best right back in the world last year. He was the best player in both legs of the Champions League semi final. He wasn't great in the final, but it doesn't mean he's finished, he was playing against the best left back in the world, and against the best team in the world.

There might not be many examples of 34 year olds coming to the PL and being brilliant, but I can't think of one that came off the back of such a good season as Dani Alves. The closest would probably be Ibrahimovic, but he stopped running a few years ago and played in a sub standard league. Alves hasn't shown any decline physically and has just played in the CL final, so he's clearly playing at a very high level.

Probably before your time, but City bought a 30 year old full back called Tony Book and he went on to be our most successful ever captain and won the footballer of the year. Let's hope Alves can have a similar impact.

The attitude of some on here is shocking. I haven't seen anybody writing him off. All transfers have positives and negatives. The important thing is to consider all aspects on balance. And, as I have stated multiple times, and as @ConnorMCFC has agreed, this is a positive signing on balance. I'm sorry if that is not positive enough for you.

Nobody is going to change your thinking on Alves no matter what evidence is put in front of you,personally i think the guy is a freak of nature still fit as a fuckin butchers dog with the athleticism,desire,abilty and winning mentality to take us forward on and off the pitch and Pep knows this hence his suggestion last seaaon that we had a weak mentality,the team will be a perfect blend of youth and experience and with Alves and hopefully Sanchez i expect us to do bid things next season.

I'd be delighted if Alves has huge impact, absolutely delighted.

I understand our need to try to replace our ageing squad but why should that be applied to every signing ?
Our problem has been that we overpaid for players like Mangala who could not produce at top level but even if we get just a couple of seasons out of Alves surely it solves a big problem for Pep.

The man is class based on recent performances at higher levels than City have ever achieved.
