Don't understand the school of thought that Iheanacho isn't good enough to be Aguero's backup. 14 goals in few, few minutes last season- did any other second choice strikers get that many? That's almost as many as all three of Crystal Palace's top scorers combined. That's more than any one player from Southampton or West Ham, Newcastle, Norwich, Aston Villa, West Brom, Bournemouth and other PL teams- players who played far more minutes. That's (let's not forget) almost twice as many as Marcus Rashford, and yet over at Old Trafford they have the faith in him to play second choice to Ibrahimovic fully in the knowledge that the former will have to miss some games. Iheanacho is good enough.
He spent all of last season clawing his way past Bony to second choice; buying another big striker will push him back own to third which is unfair, discouraging and probably bad for his development. Would rather we held out until Gabriel Jesus, and later Enes Unal, Faupala and Ambrose to provide competition. If we absolutely must get another striker, I'd rather it wasn't Sturridge- young, ambitious and his injury record would likely make him a waste of money. I'd prefer someone experienced who Iheanacho can learn from...
This may sound crazy and I'm sure many will disagree, but if we want someone who won't cost a crazy amount, and plays in a similar style to how Kelechi plays (poaching from inside the box, fast reactions, pacey and a natural finisher) who's nearing the end of his career, won't cost too much and maybe won't mind being second or even third choice, I'd take Jermain Defoe. Ticks all the boxes and will be especially easy to persuade within the next year if Moyes' Sunderland keeps being such a car crash. He doesn't seem to fit into Pep's system at all but hey, he's English.
Still, I'd rather no more new strikers at all.
