There's no point everyone whinging about Maffeo because he looked good in one game against the rags, obviously Pep doesn't think one game is enough to make the lad.
He's not "just" played well in one game against United though.
He played well on the preseason tours he went on, he played well in the other 2 games he was given and was then told all he needed was some experience playing in a real professional league like the La Masia kids used to, so he went and played 30-odd games in the division above Barcelona B, in a ridiculously tight, high pressure promotion race.
So he did what Pep asked, but because Dani Alves, probably the best RB of the last 10 years and the most Pep player around, was available, he was told to go on loan for a year at Girona, you'll get valuable experience while Alves is 35 and won't last long at all.
So then the Alves deal falls through and at this point every other club in the world - especially the clubs we are trying to emulate - would just use Maffeo, but Manchester City is going to buy a 26 year old, condemning another very promising youth player to leave City without getting a chance.
But we're not just buying a 26 year old - we're buying one who's leaving Madrid as something of a laughing stock because of his inability to defend. Maybe he'll come in and be reborn under Guardiola, but if he's not, we've scrapped another academy kid for a bang average player.
If Maffeo, represented by Guardiola's brother, with loan experience and good showings in a City shirt, in a season when both senior RB's have to be replaced and a transfer falls through last minute, can't get a chance in the team than no one will and we might as well stop pretending the academy is ever going to produce players for the first team, and Khaldoon can stop spouting bollocks about how he and Mansour want to see a team full of academy players.
