If we are interested in him, I'd say we are because of the fact Danili is versatile. At Real most used as a RB, can fit in as a LB and when needed a defensive midfieldplayer. Pep often said he needs two fullbacks for both right and left hand side, because these players in his way of playing footbaal need to be able to run a lot up and down the line. So he needs to rotate them probably more often to keep them fit.

It's not about a starting eleven, it's about keeping a 20-man squad fit and eager to play. Every player that plays about 30 games per season can look back and feel a big part of whatever will be accomplished. The 5 left are goalkeeper and players (preferably young ones) that know they will play less games. I feel the club wants to get rid of the senior players that are not gonna be used often.

Not necessarily about that.

The question would be, can he fill the 'occasional' role of Fernando or Delph, negating signing a def mid, if Pep doesn't really want one.

All signs pointed to defensive mid not being a target position this summer, we had Marti Pearnau telling Ahsan that Pep wanted 6 midfielders for 3 positions (Yaya, Fern, Gundogan, Bernardo, Silva, KDB), then obviously the fact we have no foreign spots except the one left by Alves, and all the other ITK stuff about no one in that position being wanted.

So if Danilo is coming, any midfield ability would be coincidental IMO - it might put him above another RB in the pecking order of targets, because Pep loves versatility - but I don't believe he's thinking "Yeah, get Danilo and I can solve my midfield problem and 2nd RB problem with one stone".

I'm not actually against Danilo as a player, I think the Premier League is bad at exploiting the weaknesses of players like him, and I was listening to Sid Lowe's Spanish Football podcast and they were saying he had shown a lot of improvement at the end of last season and he's doesn't really deserve the comedy tag he got. Sid Lowe's normally decent on players he's seen a lot of, and more importantly I trust Guardiola to see what he wants in a player - I'm really just a bit pissed off that this ends Maffeo's City career, as I can't believe Danilo's going to be converted to a CM full time, and with two 26 year old fullbacks ahead of him, Maffeo's never going to be given an opportunity now. God knows what that means for the academy when a player doesn't get trusted even with the experience at Girona and when all the stars align to give him a chance.

That's the point I'm making.

We don't want a def mid, so therefore, maybe Pep would prefer fullbacks who can cover that position on the occasions we find we need one.

Can I ask, this Danilo is a RB/LB/CDM. Is it derived from Football Manager? A lot of people are saying he can play there but others saying he's played only one game there.

So someone isn't right. The only explanation I can think of is people using a computer game to showcase knowledge on a player.

The RB bit comes from the fact he's a RB.

The LB comes from the fact Real Madrid used him there a fair bit because they had no back up to Marcelo.

The defensive midfielder bit comes from Brazilians saying he played there semi-occasionally at Santos.

I think when he played for Santos he was a midfield player but when he moved to Porto he got moved to a fullback.

If I recall, it was to do with the Porto manager seeing his engine being more suited to a fullback.

I can't remember exactly but something like that rings a bell.
