Dave ''Harry'' Bassett was on the verge of becoming Man City manager, deal fell through at the last second

Am I making it up but didn’t we get linked with beckenbauer around that time as well.

Every few weeks when the City management position came up for renewal, the same old names, Bassett, Royle(years before we got him) Graham, Curbishley, Allison to return, Rioch etc etc It was like Groundhog day. Incidentally, if any outsider peeped at the matchday thread, they'd truly believe we were still stuck in the 90s.

I am trying to sort out my large collection of City videos and DVDs from the last 40 years. Meant to do it for some time but helping the lad who recently posted on here who runs www.mancityclassics.co.uk has motivated me to get my finger out.

I was watching City v Palace from 84/85 this morning and Barry Davies at the start says that City have refused permission from Hibs to talk to their manager, Billy McNeil. Forgot just how far down the food chain we were!

In the summer of 95 after Brian Horton had been sacked Lee promised that "One of the top 6 managers in Europe" would be joining us. Lee knew Beckenbaur and the German was one of the top 6 managers in Europe so that's how the link was made.
One by one they turned us down including George Graham who was at Leeds at the time.
In the end we were able to prise Alan Ball away from Southampton.

Edit: Got the George Graham bit wrong. He had just returned following his ban and turned us down and went to Leeds in September

I remember playing a team managed by Bassett (presumably still Palace?) not long afterwards and beating them, and us singing “Basset, Bassett what’s the score.” He had the last laugh though I guess considering what happened the next couple of years
