Dave ''Harry'' Bassett was on the verge of becoming Man City manager, deal fell through at the last second

Let's not try to rewrite history

There was a time in the immediate post Ball/Coppell era when City were drifting and desperate for a Bassett/Allardyce/Vinny Jones figure.

The Andy Morrison signing was the eventual turning point, but let's not pretend that 96-97 didn't happen.

We needed someone to actually build a squad with a view to the long term, including development of the academy.
Typical City decided to appoint someone with a reputation for running off crying when anyone criticised him, and leaving a half-finished job behind him.
It may have been fun while it lasted with Keegan, but it was never going to last long. I wouldn't have touched him with a bargepole for the City job. Moyes was infinitely more suited to the 'project'.
Signing a number of ageing players in 2003 didnt seem like long term squad building. Promotion season under KK was great though.

The same as Sam Allardyce both would of been ok for a short to medium term fix

David Moyes would have been a far better long term choice for City than Keegan.
Long term? That was never what supporting city was about. That Keegan season is right up there with my favourites of all time. It typifies what football is about and that is hope and dreams. If you’d prefer that sterile bollocks of Moyes to what we had then you don’t really love sport for what it is.
