Dave Watson has neurodegenerative disease

Sad news, first saw him playing for Sunderland, h had a superb game for them vs Leeds. We got a few players from that Cup winning team, Watson being one of them. An absolute rock of a defender, with skill, passion and honesty. One of our best centre halves if not THE best. Superb in an England shirt as well . Hope he doesn't suffer too much as he goes through this . A horrible disease, my thoughts are with him, his family and friends . A great Blue, but i guess they'll be saying similar on Wearside and Southampton and several other clubs

Sad, sad news. Great player and a great man.

How many other players who were known as great headers of the ball will get this shit disease?

Glad I was a 'keeper.

Gutting news, one of my very first heroes, had everything I admire in a centre half, and tough as hell, cannot pay him a higher compliment than to say he walks into my all time City 11 alongside Vinnie, an absolute colossus, my very best wishes big Dave .

Really sad to read about this, he formed a great CB partnership with Doyle. I was behind the goal where that header went in with astonishing power considering he was a good 12 yards out. Best wishes to Dave and his family.

sad sad news, surprised there isn't more getting this horrible disease considering how heavy the balls got in the 60/70's with the awful pitches in the bad weather

So sad to hear, Doyle and Watson were the CB's when my dad started to take me to Maine Road as a kid, both great players.

All the best Dave and family.

Sad news, my hero growing up.
I played centre half, like Dave and my Dad, my Dad passed away 6 years ago with unexplained brain disease, which now looks like it was brought on by heading the old heavy balls, i await my fate and after leaving a half pack of frozen burgers on top of the freezer instead of in it last week i could well be on the way to joining them both!

Don't think it was an OG. He headed it past the advancing Joe Corrigan but, from memory, Fairclough nipped in and knocked it into the empty net.

Either way, what a colossus. Fantastic traditional centre half.
WOW I always remembered it as an oggy but you may well be correct.40+ years is a long time for my old grey matter. ;)

That's a tragedy. He would have walked into our current team. Without doubt the best defender I have seen at City along with Vinny. A great partnership with Doyle in 76,77,78.

Big Dave was a great player and captain for us. England regular for 5 or 6 years. Sold by Allison far too soon. That goal v Ipswich. As someone once said; "Those who witnessed it wondered if it was possible to kick the ball as hard as Watson just headed it". Sad to hear of him suffering this way.

People will say heading the ball should be banned, Jeff Astle's widow would probably agree, but i can't see that happening because it's such a big part of the game. More specifically it was such a big part of Dave Watson's game, too. I hope the club honours him at a match soon, what a rousing reception he'll get.

(makes you fear for that other warrior with frequent head injuries Pablo Zabaleta, doesn't it?)
