Dave Watson has neurodegenerative disease

Sad news, my hero growing up.
I played centre half, like Dave and my Dad, my Dad passed away 6 years ago with unexplained brain disease, which now looks like it was brought on by heading the old heavy balls, i await my fate and after leaving a half pack of frozen burgers on top of the freezer instead of in it last week i could well be on the way to joining them both!

Don't think it was an OG. He headed it past the advancing Joe Corrigan but, from memory, Fairclough nipped in and knocked it into the empty net.

Either way, what a colossus. Fantastic traditional centre half.
WOW I always remembered it as an oggy but you may well be correct.40+ years is a long time for my old grey matter. ;)

That's a tragedy. He would have walked into our current team. Without doubt the best defender I have seen at City along with Vinny. A great partnership with Doyle in 76,77,78.

Big Dave was a great player and captain for us. England regular for 5 or 6 years. Sold by Allison far too soon. That goal v Ipswich. As someone once said; "Those who witnessed it wondered if it was possible to kick the ball as hard as Watson just headed it". Sad to hear of him suffering this way.

People will say heading the ball should be banned, Jeff Astle's widow would probably agree, but i can't see that happening because it's such a big part of the game. More specifically it was such a big part of Dave Watson's game, too. I hope the club honours him at a match soon, what a rousing reception he'll get.

(makes you fear for that other warrior with frequent head injuries Pablo Zabaleta, doesn't it?)
