David Conn on Abu Dhabi and Human Rights

Had all this before with Thaksin. Are there any ethical fans out there who wouldn't support City because of stuff like this? They're the best owners in the world, so I don't give a toss if they're killing a thousand dissenters a day in their own country.

As somebody who did not renew there STs when Shinawatra took over and as somebody who until last season didnt attend a game again i have to say Conns story tugs at me.

The saving grace and i say that with a heavy heart is that Shinawatra was complicit in HR abuse whilst Mansour is not.

My beliefs cost me the chance to see us win trophies as my tickets had gone but i would make the same decision tomorrow if proof was god forbid released.

Considering our own Government's fairly ambivalent attitude towards the use of torture in "the national interest" it could equally be argued that the hugely successful English Premier League brand is used to 'launder' the UK's image overseas.

Unfortunately such press only applies to the Muslim owner. All the others are running such perfect and honest business models.

This isn't a vendetta against us and whilst I've enjoyed our success these past few years, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel uncomfortable about where our money has come from. All fans with this kind of ownership should.

Geoff, Anyone with any kind of ridiculous money would have something very dubious in their, their partner's, their family's, their ancentral history as part of how they got that level of riches or being part of keeping it or the showing power whilst having it.

Whilst not condoning the suppression of human rights anywhere in the world , I don't think it's a good idea for we Brits to cast the first stone!
In my lifetime I have seen British governments arrest and imprison , without trial , our own citizens in Northern Ireland , a country where political and social unrest was met with massive military force.
I have seen British governments prepared to let businessmen go to prison because evidence that would have cleared them was deemed " too sensitive for public knowledge "and was sat on by politicians who would have been embarrassed by its release!
I have seen British governments colluding in the transportation of " political prisoners" to Guantanamo bay and other places presumably in the knowledge of the treatment that would be handed out, ie waterboarding and other assorted niceties. ( coincidentally , some well known British firms have been selling equipment such as electric cattle prods to various foreign government security forces - not farmers as far as I know). Let's not ask what they do with them!
Now we have accounts of police officers attempting to investigate and smear the friends and families of racial attacks instead of conducting proper enquiries into the original offences- oh and don't forget the organised smear campaign and cover- up over Hillsborough!
If you want to look for abuse of human rights mr conn just look out of your window ,
