We know you read this forum, so here goes.

I know you are only a sports rather than a real journalist but you are supposed to be the "brainy one".(However low that bar maybe in the Guardian Sports Department)

When even the headline for your story contains two fundamental errors you need to look at yourself.

The headline reads

<<Human Rights Watch describes country ruled by City owner as 'a black hole' for basic human rights>>

1. Abu Dhabi isn't a country, just like Florida isn't a country. The country is the United Arab Emirates, of which AD is but one Emirate.

2. The City Owner does not rule either Abu Dhabi or the UAE.

Given the idiocy of the headline how informed can the rest of the article be?

On top of that, althpugh I will grant you perhaps this is more subjective Abu Dhabi is not a "black hole for human rights". I know this to be true because I live there and experience it every day.

I have also traveled to many countries that are becoming black holes for human rights. Russia, for instance, you know, the country that you probably think is "ruled" by Roman Abramovic.

Shame on you for such a shabby parroting of 3rd party publicity seeking.

What was the pitch? "Cut and paste this David, you'll look ever so clever."?

David Conn won't have written that headline, so your personal criticism of him is way off in this instance. He's also an excellent and incredibly thorough journalist who puts the majority of his industry peers to shame.

Lets keep this simple. If you ruled a country that made you immensely wealthy and you knowingly committed human rights violations, do you a) Buy a sports franchise and build it in to something that draws global attention to your situation or b) Keep quiet, enjoy the lifestyle and generally try to keep your head down ?
It's just not a rational argument that you buy a Premier League club to launder your human rights record.

-- Wed Jul 31, 2013 6:25 am --

Did David Conn not write the bit about Mubarak going to discuss military cooperation alongside Sheikh Mohammed with our defence secretary either?

I see one motivation behind Manchester City being mentioned both by HRW and by Conn, and it is to use our name to attract attention. Sheikh Mansour isn't using us to distract attention from human rights. The attention isn't there anyway. Rather, it is HRW and Conn who are using our name to attract attention to the issue. Whether out of fine motive or not, I don't know, but that is what they are doing.
Pretty much this.

How can you be so sure he didn't write the headline?
Because it's simply not his job to do so. He'd have had no idea where on the page his article would be placed, how many columns it would cover, or whether it would have to wrap around any adverts or pictures. They have sub-editors to do all that and they'd have made the call long after he'd left the office. Shit headlines dreamt up by subs are the bugbear of print journalists and I'd imagine David Conn isn't especially impressed with this particular effort, but that's just the way it goes.

-- Wed Jul 31, 2013 6:45 am --

Yes, he did, and by all means criticise him for it if that's your opinion.

Have Etihad Airways gone under since the takeover?? no theyve blossomed...

Where are the calls for people to boycott this airline due to the human rights violations in the United Arab Emirates...

What about Ferrari , Are they saying that this company is aiding human rights abuse... I think these are the rantings of a jealous football fan rather than a news writer. PSG and City have weakened Uniteds hold and this guy is just pissed at Arabian Billionaires.

Personally, I don't really give a shit what the 'Human Right's' record is. We base these opinions on our own distorted view of the World as we wring our hands with post colonial guilt. Other parts of the globe will no doubt look at the West and judge our behaviour dimly, based upon their own values. For example, where doe HRW sit with us and the Yanks bombing the fuck out of what is a Third World country in the form of Afghanistan? We think it's perfectly justified, but residents of other parts of the World think it's the actions of savages.

Our owners are special.

Having once worked as a sub I can assure you all headline suggestions are welcomed, especially so from the writer, who is often expected to offer a range of possible screamers, although the final choice is sometimes not welcomed by same.

I'm struggling to work out why we are involved in this. If Conn wants to write about human rights abuses then so be it. But making it about us just stinks of sensationalism to me.
At last this is about city not human rights, conn did not even have to mention the clubs name,

Whilst not condoning the suppression of human rights anywhere in the world , I don't think it's a good idea for we Brits to cast the first stone!
In my lifetime I have seen British governments arrest and imprison , without trial , our own citizens in Northern Ireland , a country where political and social unrest was met with massive military force.
I have seen British governments prepared to let businessmen go to prison because evidence that would have cleared them was deemed " too sensitive for public knowledge "and was sat on by politicians who would have been embarrassed by its release!
I have seen British governments colluding in the transportation of " political prisoners" to Guantanamo bay and other places presumably in the knowledge of the treatment that would be handed out, ie waterboarding and other assorted niceties. ( coincidentally , some well known British firms have been selling equipment such as electric cattle prods to various foreign government security forces - not farmers as far as I know). Let's not ask what they do with them!
Now we have accounts of police officers attempting to investigate and smear the friends and families of racial attacks instead of conducting proper enquiries into the original offences- oh and don't forget the organised smear campaign and cover- up over Hillsborough!
If you want to look for abuse of human rights mr conn just look out of your window ,
Great post.

Clearly two wrongs don't make a right and Human Right's abuses are disgusting. One wonders whether the same capital could have been made had an Emir or Oligarch taken over Southend? Unfortunately, we are high profile therefore it's more of a headline maker and a way of attracting attention to Mr McGeehan's (very noble) cause.

As for Conn, I genuinely have very little respect for him. When some fans attempted to to get a Supporter's Trust going, the very thing I would have thought Conn would have supported, in my opinion, he was almost anonymous.

Anyway, as for both Mr McGeehan and Mr Conn, I imagine they have never purchased a product made in the UAE, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan etc etc.

We should all be aware of and concerned about human rights abuses and the fact that we're City supporters shouldn't close our eyes to this. All the owners of the big clubs are dubious in some way or other.

The Glazers and their business practices, hiding behind tax havens and entities that restrict disclosure of their financial affairs.
At Arsenal there is Kroenke, part of the Walmart-owning family, a business which is notorious for its exploitation of its workforce. Then there's Usmanov, a friend of the Russian and Uzbek regimes, whose human rights abuses are worse than anything in Abu Dhabi.
Chelsea - for Abramovich see Usmanov.

Conn has written critical articles about all these. Why should he sacrifice his principles just because of the club he supports? It would be as hypocritical as the Catholic hierarchy protecting paedophile priests.

You could also look at it the other way and say that articles like this are more likely to embarrass the UAE and make them change their ways.

Well said PB, sums up my own thoughts on the subject.

Here here. Some things are bigger than football and we need to remember that, no matter how good our owners are. An extreme example is how Hitler romanced the German people with staging the Olympic games. Before anyone has a conniption, I'm not comparing the sheikh to Hitler! I just think people need to forget the ties to City for a moment and realise that the lack of freedom of speech, democracy, protest and fair working conditions is a real issue in the UAE, as well as in a lot of places in the middle east. However, and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with the criticism from Amnesty, there's real irony when Conn says our owners are using city to launder their reputation when he is using city to sensationalise his article! This is an important issue unrelated to city IMO. And he is wrong when he says football fans should be worried. Fans should be worried if they have a wider concern for people abroad, but they certainly have no responsibility to. It's a personal choice. For me, I do care and I think it's wrong. But don't drag my club into a political and foreign social issue just because they own it.

Someone tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure this article was published, and discussed on Bluemoon, a few weeks ago. I'm sure this article, dated yesterday, is an identical copy of that previous story. In which case, it can only be assumed that David Conn has a huge problem with City and is using Sheikh Mansour to dish out the dirt.
