So hands up who's ever seen Silva play a great deal different to what we saw today? Not saying he's a bad player or couldn't do it for City but today Silva did what he does. Sometimes it works out better. Sometimes he's inspired but on the whole, on average, Silva does what he did today & that's what we'd be signing.

He's been quality for Valencia and Spain on a regular basis. Starts nearly every game for Spain and they've been on a fantastic run up to the world cup.

He plays well in Europe too, not to mention scoring a wonder goal at Stamford bridge v Chelsea.

You don't start every game for club and country and have a host of clubs after you if you are average.

I've never been overly impressed with him either. for me there are plenty of mythical players talked out who are no better than players already at the club like Richards, Onouha, Zabba, Ireland, Robinho (if he comes back and by the way he's still better than almost anyone at the WC so far), RSC, Adebayor, etc. I'm not saying people shouldn't speculate, hope for signings or be critical of some of our own players. I for example would like Yaya over DeJong. But I struggle to understand those talked about as superstars who I've never seen have a "super" game, like Silva, Gourcoff, Benzema, Ramos, Higuin, etc.

Those who talked of Ozil were on the money though. That boy has skill and vision - whether he is better than Robinho or more suited to the Premier League is unclear though. I'd prefer to stick with Robinho if it twas my decision though. Better the devil you know and all that.

And I'd prefer Ireland and Johnson and Ibrahim and Clayton and the lot. IMO we should be signing one or two big time players and then beefing up the academy. We should be blooding at least 4 or 5 of the current crop this season. Basically we should be trying to become Arsenal not Chelsea.

so he's managed to build himself a world class reputation
and also managed to get himself into arguably the best national team in the world
because he's been shit for the last 5 years?

Why the fuck are you saying I'm suggesting Silva is shit? Where did I say that? Why are you putting words in my mouth that I've quite clearly not said? You must have thought he was shit today because all I said was that it was a fairly typical Silva performance. It was quite good, not special which most of his performances are.

If you thought it was shit then you're the one slagging him, not me.

-- Thu Jun 17, 2010 2:01 am --

I agree with a lot of what you're saying although I'm not sure Clayton & Ibrahim are quite up there.

The other players you've listed though are obviously very good but not 'greats'. I've seen my arse with Robinho but thee's no denying his ability & I don't see how the Silva's & Gourcuff's are guaranteed to be better than him in the Prem. Of course they could possibly be but it's all just a huge gamble.

I agree though that Ozil has looked potentially a class above the rest over recent seasons & personally I'd consider him worth the risk. Ireland & Johnno have the talent but will they do it?

Re: please, please sign david silva

MANCHESTER City have made another significant move in the transfer market with an official bid of £30m for David Silva, the exciting Spain winger.

However, it is understood the 24-year-old, who played in Spain's defeat to Switzerland yesterday, would prefer a move to either Chelsea or Manchester United if he were to leave Valencia this summer, as appears likely.

Chelsea are understood to be considering a move for Silva, but City's early bid may prove decisive, especially as Valencia are desperately in need of cash, despite claims that the sale of David Villa for £34m to Barcelona has stabilised their finances.

It is understood City are close to announcing the signing of Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure from Barcelona for £25m, having already signed defender Jerome Boateng from Hamburg for £11m.

There is a strong chance that City will also land England midfielder James Milner after the World Cup, as they have indicated their intention of making an improvement of their £20m offer which was rejected last month by Aston Villa.

All the players City are targeting are featuring in the World Cup, which may lead to a delay in a number of the deals.

If they are successful, it will take their spending to more than £90m and would raise question marks over the future of a number of City players such as Stephen Ireland. (© Daily Telegraph, London)

come on city lets get this lad signed asap please!!!! fuck chelsea, valencia want the most cash so lets blow them out of the water! silva is a star and would be superb in the premiership.

Re: please, please sign david silva

For those who think he is too lightweight for the PL. Remember when Spuds first signed Modric everyone thought they had made a big mistake as he was easily pushed off the ball but look at him now, he's adapted to the PL so why not Silva etc

However it is understood that the 24 year-old, who played in Spain’s defeat to Switzerland yesterday, would prefer a move to either Chelsea or Manchester United if he were to leave Valencia this summer, as appears likely.
Chelsea are understood to be considering a move for Silva but City’s early bid may prove decisive, especially as Valencia are desperately in need of cash, despite claims that the sale of David Villa for £34 million to Barcelona has stabilised their finances.

The move for Silva marks City out as the Premier League club expected to be the most active this summer. It is understood they are close to announcing the signing of Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure from Barcelona for £25 million, having already signed defender Jerome Boateng from Hamburg for £11 million.
There is a strong chance that City will also land England midfielder James Milner after the World Cup, especially as they have already indicated their intention of making an improvement of their £20 million offer which was rejected last month by Aston Villa.
All four of the players City are targeting are featuring in the World Cup, which may lead to a delay in a number of the deals but the club’s financial muscle is being flexed and it is expected that they will prove successful in all of their offers.
If they are, it will take their spending to more than £90 million with the possibility of more to come with the club backing manager Roberto Mancini as he sets about re-shaping his squad after succeeding Mark Hughes last December. The major power-broker at City, however, is football administrator Brian Marwood and he is thought to be behind the bids, especially the move for Milner.
Silva, Milner and Toure would be part of a new-look midfield which would raise question marks over the future of a number of City players. Stephen Ireland is already likely to leave and may be followed by Shaun Wright-Phillips and Craig Bellamy, while the club are also looking for buyers for Roque Santa Cruz.
It had been thought that Silva, like Villa, would favour a move to another Spanish club. However he is keen to join the Premier League, although he is concerned that City are not in the Champions League which has led to him express greater interest in Chelsea or United.
Earlier this week outgoing Barca club president Joan Laporta hinted that a deal with City to sign Toure was edging closer to completion. “The sale of Toure is very advanced,” he said.
