Dayot Upamecano

Never said he was world class, that you must've imagined or dreamt of. I've always said he can be world class and that is an very objective opinion

Anyone who is assessing Upamecano on his 2 displays since the restart is a clown, no he has not played well nobody has, Angelino was the best player in the first game yet he did not play particularly well, he is 1 year older that Garcia and he is a starter in a top team, he is also playing better than Stones was at that age

Before his injury, Konaté looked the best of the three (Konaté, Upamecano, Mukiele). Shame about his injury, though. Would've been a good signing for us this summer, I think.

He's two years older than Garcia but your point still stands. However someone like Tapsoba has looked like he has played matches every week during lockdown while other targets like Upamecano and Elvedi has struggled big time. Tah who we have been linked to has even struggled to make it onto the pitch. Players will react different to months without matches, Brandt and Sancho looks like they've eaten nothing but deep fried chicken and cake every day during lookdown but still has impressed now after the pause.

I think it's unfair to judge players after the restart until at least 5 games has been played so they can gain some match fitness, rhytm and form back. That would be from next gameweek going forward

The only problem Stones has had is a failure to eradicate mistakes from his game, exactly the same problem Upamecano has. A lot of posters say Upamecano will learn to eradicate those mistakes with experience but the exact same was said about Stones a few years ago, there's no guarantees.

He's got a lot of potential but that's all it is, the exact same as Stones, Garcia and Adaradiayo but still people claim we should spend a small fortune on him, I don't get it.

I hope the FA don't use the same excuse as we'll have to give the Charity Shield back and drop 10 points from the start of the season. I hope if Stones has a few bad games after a spell out injured you give him the same impunity to criticism, I suspect you and 90% of other posters won't be so forgiving though.

Maybe, but physically Upamecano is on a completely different planet. Stones gets pushed off the ball far too easily and isn't brilliant in the air. We concede most of our goals either from set-pieces or on the break - I think his pace and strength could add another dimension to our defence.

I love this comment, physicality has its pros and cons just like everything else but it's crazy how much emphasis people put on physicality, when it's just a tiny element of what makes up a players game.

We forget very quickly we were the smallest team in the league the last two years. Everyone said Pep wouldn't be able to cut it in this country and his style of football wouldn't work, it did, yes we adapted and had to have a good balance between physicality, technicality, tactical discipline and mentality but that's all it was, a tiny element of what makes up a teams game.

It's not a tiny part of the game though is it? Otherwise all your CBs would be 5ft6.
In a defender, pace & power are two huge parts of the game. Intelligence, managing a back line, positional sense etc are all important, but if you've got an absolutely rapid winger about to counter, or they're about to swing in a cross onto their 6ft4 striker's head, a physical player can make all the difference.

Besides, Upamecano ranks pretty highly for passing % and playing out from the back, so it's not like it's a sacrifice. He's just had a few bad games.

You'll have to try and explain how Mangala is a better central defender than Cannavaro to me.

You can't have the biggest, fastest, most skillful technically gifted, tactically astute players with a perfect mentality all the time because there's only a finite number of them available; hence why Laporte, Kompany and VVD are so highly sought after and so infrequently available. You have to make compromises somewhere and I place a far higher value on the technical, tactical and mental aspects of the game than physicality. That's not to say I'm advocating signing Paulo Maldini in his 50's, I obviously mean reasonable compromises.

You clearly don't, it's no problem, we just have differing opinions. You'll never change my mind and I'll never change yours.

Are we really comparing Mangala with a World Cup & Balon D'or winner?

You're right, it's incredibly rare to find a CB that ticks every box, but for the price, his age, his physical and technical ability, I think he's the best realistic option. Having a stronger team & Pep coaching him could improve him dramatically in terms of concentration. He'd be a massive upgrade to Otamendi & Stones.
