Dayot Upamecano

Don't see the hype about him
All the raw tools that makes a dominant worldclass defender. Very fast, very strong, good defending skills, read the game well, good on the ball, very good passing and passing range for a CB.

However his brainfarts and lapses of concetration has cost him and Leizig. The period from new year to before the Corona break he seemed to have erased those misstakes out of his game and the hype was justified. After the corona break however his performance's has left a lot to be desired

I still think his time will come, and that he will be world class in the future if he stays injury free. Erasing brainfarts out of the game is usually something that comes with age. Upamecano is a lot better and more complete than Van Dijk and Koulibaly at the same age.

However after the break he has shown that a transfer to a club like Man City is definitely still too early for him, he's still raw

As the old saying goes "form is temporary, class is permanent". I'm glad you've finally seen Upamecano for what he actually is, rather than just telling us all he's world class already.

I mean there was legitimate reasons to believe that he had left those brainfarts behind him given that he had looked class and made minimal misstakes for almost half a year. He's still better than what we have at RCB and he's still a world class prospect that can turn it around. These months without football seems to have hit hard on all bundesliga defences. The more I think about it, the more I think we should just get a readymade world class CB like Koulibaly and Skriniar, especially if we can avoid the CL ban. Read the summer transfers thread, I explain it better there

Mangala was the exact same as this lad, arguably more proven. I still maintain that had we been able to get Mangala and Kompany together for a run of games and a decent LB we would have seen a much better player. I don't think Upamecano is the option for us at the minute.

A period of 3-6 months is just good form, it's not sustained enough to think anyone is finally world class. I think it's unfair to say he's better than what we have too, Stones has had periods of 3-6 months when he's looked very good as well, same with Otamendi, it means nothing unless it's sustainable.

Never said he was world class, that you must've imagined or dreamt of. I've always said he can be world class and that is an very objective opinion

Mangala was nowhere near as good as Upamecano on the ball and when it comes to passing

He consistently had a good passing % since he broke into the team at Porto, plenty of videos of his short and long range passing whilst at Porto.

I don't get the feeling Pep is looking for a CB to hit passes into the channels. Laporte is capable of course but otherwise the CBs just normally rotate the ball and keep it moving.
