No as I agree that it is unlikely. However, the league has been won on goal difference 5 times in history so its not unheard of.

Anyway, the argument was what is a better result 5-1 or 4-0. And the answer remains 5-1.

We both want the same thing. But assuming this season doesn't end in level goal difference I would prefer the majority of wins going to nil. It's about preferences. I can see your point and that is fine.

And I see yours, its quite funny that we have got to a stage where we are arguing over 4-0 or 5-1!!!

Lol!!! Makes a nice change, though.

Re: De Jong last night..

Even though a good goals for column is more valuable than a good goals against column, i would always prefer a 4-0 win to a 5-1 win. Unless their goal is a wonder strike, winning 5-1 still means you've made a mistake during the match. 4-0 is a complete shut out, no mistakes, perfection. This is what Mancini wants. It's also good for our mentality to keep clean sheets.

What if it was a friendly - would you prefer the defence to have a clean sheet and the attack 4 goals, or attack 5 and our defence allowing one in?

I took the initial question to be along those lines rather than bringing the potential for goals scored coming into it - just a simple, straighforward question I thought ;-)

Me - 4-0.

It was asked without the need of the 'goals scored' scenario. But I can see where johnmc was coming from. I just prefer clean sheets, especially when we tonk someone.

Yep, good point. If its a cup game or a friendly then I would say 4-0 is a better result mentally (although I personally prefer to see goals so still 5-1 for me). In a league situation 5-1 is better.

Thanks. And goodnight on this topic.

De Jong last night..

It is easy to think that without NDJ we get a team thats more attacking and thus is scoring more. There is little statistic backing up that claim. But there is more statistic backing up the claim that with Nigel we concede less. Simple logic tells me that by not conceding we will win or draw every game, if we concede we will not. There is a reason BM decided to build the team as a strong defensive unit.

If we sacrifice our strong defense there is a risk of becoming just another arsenal, pretty football at times, but cant keep our legs shut.

When dry patches occur, and they will, it pays to not concede. It seems to me that alot of people on here have a short memory. Id rather win 1-0 than 5-4.

John I just saw into the future... I saw Vinny holding the Premiership trophy aloft! :-)
