De Jong

I agree he is immense. Problem is he picks himself, but unfortunately he stifles our play going forward, and therefore shouldnt be playing every game. Today with Ireland on instead of him it may have been a totally different game - part of the reason NDJ looks so good is that there is so much space between our midfield and our attackers that the opposition then get space, which then Nigel has to put himself about to deal with it. I think he should play when we play big sides, but we should be more adventurous against shite like wigan.

Shite like Wigan?????????????

De Jong is quality. Does the job asked of him.

Mean in the tackle and good on the ball. Great screen for our dodgy defense yesterday.

I totally agree with this and it presents the manager with a major conundrum.

Everyone can see that De Jong has been immense for us over recent weeks but, with both De Jong and Barry in the side, away from home, I am seeing that we are going to fall into the same pattern as last season, with poor teams playing the game in our half of the field because there is no link between the midfield and the strikers.

At the end of the day, Wigan are no great shakes but we rarely put them under any sustained pressure. I'm beginning to think that we might have to sacrifice the width to keep de Jong and Barry doing what they are good at but give the midfield some attacking impetus in the middle, with the addition of Ireland, because we really miss his link up play with the forwards.

De Jong was immense against Wigan and I was abit surprised Ireland didnt start when he looked so good against Villa when he came on!

My guessing was that with Toure + Bellars out that Hughes thought he needed to protect the back four more and to stiffen the midfield with Petrov playing who isnt the most defensive minded player!

De Jong is also quality going forward, just watch him play for Holland, proper box to box midfielder. But if he played like that for us, we'd get murdered. Someone needs to stay back to help the defence, especially if we are breaking wide and have the fullback further up the field.

was fantastic today and has to be one of the best performance I've ever seen from a holding midfielder. I'm gutted for him that we only came away with a point.

We only 'came away with a point' yesterday for two basic reasons ....

a) Whist Wigan didn't really create much , we created even less ........ and we're not gonna score many goals unless that improves.

b) We are still not 'focussing' or even competing , for the full 90 minutes ....... we have posts on here labelling certain City players yesterday as being 'lazy' , others quite rightly blasting players for gettin' themselves sent off , and we are still conceding goals at ridiculous times , times when we really should be 100% concentrating on the job in hand!

When you add to that that we still give the ball away too much , and immediately hand the oppostion the impetus , you can see there is still work to be done.

Lots of work to be done...but when it is...whooooooooooooooooosh!!

Agree NDJ has been excellent this season.
However, I still feel he is at his best behind 2 central midfielders (Barry & Ireland) like he does for Holland.
This is the formation we played against Arse & Scum & whilst it means we can only play 1 up, it does give the wide players a bit more freedom to push on.
I personally feel this is his/our strongest set up.
