De Jong

Hahahaha!! NMc, your a wum, for real!! Not sure that anybody said Nige was 'world class', but he's certainly not far off against today's set of DMs!

Apart from Essien(and Kompany who is CB, this year), name me four that would push NdJ into fifth, in the Prem...

Be aware that if you can't then the Prem is full of sh*t players of which our own sh*t player rides upon the very crest.
Malouda, Fabregas, Essien, Lampard, Milner, Barry, Gerrard, Mascherano, Huddlestone, Zakora, Carrick, Fletcher, Cahill.........
They're all better midfielders than De Jong and they can all tackle just as well as De Jong. I can name another dozen or so if you want.....
As for the chappy going on about playing 4 striker and leaving a big hole in the middle, there won't be a big hole, just two mobile midfielders. De Jong leaves huge holes with his immobility and stuborness in not supporting play.

*chuckle*

Huddlestone?? Zakora, who doesn't play in English footy any more??!! Essien, whom I said 'apart from'?! Mascherano passes sideways almost often as Nige!!

Knowing that de Jong is a DM, as well you know, you proceed to mention wingers, CMs and AMs as direct competition for Nige!! LOL!!

Stop! It hurts!! Hahahahaha!!

Not read the whole thread but for me it's simple.

Against teams we should be hammering, we leave Nigel out and go all out (i.e. Burnley game). We play better football without him.

Against teams like United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. he has to play as this is where we're not gonna smash teams but need that added protection that he gives so well. He shines in these types of games too.

This is why it's a squad game, just like SWP, they can come in in certain games and do a great job, so don't be so quick to write players off.

Why am I disillusioned with his style of Play? Besides the fact that he can't/didn't score (given the few instances of good goal scoring opportunities he had this season) and when we attacked as a team apparently we played with 'one' player less.

Cogitate on this
1. Pienaar's goal against us at Goodison Park!
2. Arteta's goal @ our turf! Is it true
i. A holding & defensive midfielder is supposed to afford protection to our back four?
ii. Who was the nearest City player & covering Arteta, couldn't keep pace with him given the headstart, didn't 'slide tackle' at instance of Arteta shooting?

Please tell me.

From the OP you'd get the impression that he's saying that de Jong is shit. But he's not saying this right?

He's saying that were a better team when he doesn't play as it provided different ball movements right?

However, I lorve Nigel.

My whole point is that teams don't need holding midfielders, any of those names is a better footballer than De Jong, if a manager tells them to fill his role they'd do it with knobs on!
Answer the questions I asked you.
I have to ask what is quality about him?
He tackles like some Wimbledon relic from the 80's.
Passes like Stevie Wonder.
And moves like a milk float.
Tell me exactly what you think he does with so much quality that he's "not far short of world class"
Chelsea played with Makelele in a similar role, but if you remember they were slagged off by their own fans for the dire football they played and Makelele was a better player by a mile.
I'ts an outdated idea and can be done by a footballer instead of a thug so we have 11 players on the pitch, why play a clogger there?

I've said it before....

DeJong offers little to our attacking options and in some cases negates them... however, he is the right man to bring on when we need to close out or hold on.

If we'd have signed Mariga or Gago, then I think NDJ would be on the fringe now.

I cannot be bothered replying to someone who cannot see the nuances in the game, unless it's about getting it up the pitch. I had a lengthy reply to your answer, originally, but suddenly I thought 'why do I bother?!'!!

I don't know why Hughes or Mancini see fit to employ a 'clogger' like de Jong. It's simply ridiculous.

I bow to your superior intellect.

I am now officially bored of the subject.

Gago isn't really a defensive minded midfielder, he's a more central/attacking midfielder, similar to where Fabregas plays for Arsenal. He's not really a De Jong replacement, unless you're playing him and Barry in the centre of midfield in a 4-4-2.

Again you can't tell me exactly what he does so well!
I think it's you who is missig the nuances of the game, the lack of pace movement and adaptability in our midfield has cost us dear this season. If you have one player that stubbornly won't move forward it effects the game of the rest of the midfield, his central partner has to move forward more than is natural. Many times in midfield, the best man to move forward is the man on the ball, we're handicapped every time De Jong gets the ball.
De Jong isn't even the best "DM" at the club!
The top midfielders of the past piss themselves at the idea of a DM, especially one with less ability than Vinny Jones!
I obviously watch the game in more detail than you, don't pretend it's the other way round. Our midfield has been over run by some of the weakest teams in the league this season, I know why, can't fathom what you're thinking or watching.
