De Jong

Mancini's decision not to risk him getting banned is going to work wonders for us. It has meant that he's not played in the games where he's not needed, but will be fully refreshed for games against the rags and Arsenal, once the threat of a ban has disappeared.

it's been said alot, in games where he isn't needed like bunrley wigan we will play better without him, he isn't needed.

he needs to be played in the games against the likes of chelsea, the scum, dippers, arsenal.

in all the big games he never fails to deliver, he had chelsea's midfield in his back pocket when we beat them 2-1at CoMS.

still a truely class player and does his job so well, i think he get's alot of unfair stick, it's not his fault the manager picks him when we play an average side at home.

I agree with all of this apart from the last bit - people tend to go overboard about De Jong and his style of play.

i say that because people think he's gonna run forward and take 5 players on, his job is to protect, break up play and release and let the rest get on with it, you won't find many better players in the world than de jong that does it,

It's guranteed if de jong played on sunday and started trying to run forward taking on the brum midfield and kept losing it or playing extreme passes, he would get slaughtered on here like mad and everyone would just say why he is doing that? that's not his role.

if you want him to charge forward and leave us exposed then i'm sorry it won't happen, quality player, He does his job brilliantly, what more can people want?

The reason you wont find many players like that is because he is almost anti football, the only other true holding midfielder is mascharano and he makes de jong look like a pub player

the thing is he doesnt do his job brillantly, he's ok at it sometimes. but to many times this season when we've needed him to scrap and get hold of the midifeld and he's bin out fought.

coincidence or not city havent lost when de jong hasnt played this season and we've usually played better football

The problem is that he only release to Toure and Kompany instead of releasing it a bit further to for example Bellamy, Barry or Johnson. He always pass it backwards, meaning we very rarely can take use of the element of surprise. It's like he doesn't even try to look forward. The opposition always get time to position themselves correctly.

City have 6 wins and 2 draws in the 8 League games De Jong hasn't started (including 4 away wins.)

I think it's unfair to suggest that the difference between Wigan and Burnley was due to the fact that De Jong wasn't playing. Fact is, the performance from the whole team was miles better, mainly because we played higher up the pitch from the start, put Burnley's defenders under pressure from the off, and played with real tempo and drive. First half against Wigan the defence was sat on the edge of our own 18 yard box, which means that De Jong is inevitably going to be sat deep as well, and that there is going to be far too much space in the centre of midfield for the opposition. Personally, I don't buy the idea that De Jong can't play in a 4-4-2, or that he in some way prevents us playing decent attacking football. That's not to say that he should be in the team every week, and I agree that Mancini should definitely stick with Vieira and Barry for next game. But some people are being far too quick in writing him off as too one-dimensional - if (please!) we continue to play for the rest of the season with the same kind of positive attitude, let's see how De Jong does then when given a chance.

I love De Jong, great attitude, always gives 100% but there are a few games in the run in where I wouldn't start him. We always struggle against Spurs, they always seem to know how to play us and when they haven't got the ball they get as many men back as possible making it difficult for us to break them down, I feel that if we start De Jong against Spurs and Villa we won't get the ball forward quick enough to hurt them. Having said that, he could be the difference away against Arsenal. We'll need him in there at the Emirates to stop Arsenal playing their incisive passing in midfield. He's a great player but Mancini needs to pick teams for specific games, so I don't expect De Jong to play every game in the run in. Fantastic player to have in our squad though.
