The irony there is neither of us needed RVP, but both of us needed a quality midfielder, them more than us actually, but they've shot their load all over a striker now and cannot afford what they desperately need.

They had to drag Scholes out of retirement last year ffs, and he's even older now! Kagawa? Not having it. Not nearly good enough.

They've left us a free run at a player who will drastically improve us, far more than the luxury buy that RVP was for us...

Mancini is pretty much a master of bluffing.

He is not going to out in a press conference and say "yes, we are confident" in relation to signing De Rossi. If it was someone like Scott Sinclair then yes, but not someone of the magnitude of De Rossi.

If we do get De Rossi can you imagine Kagawa & whoever else at United - no one good - against De Rossi and Yaya? Especially with their insistence on playing the long outdated 4-4-2? Frightening. We would tear it up.

Although to be fair, there is pretty much no one that they could put in there to better those two. They should have tried to sign De Rossi instead of panic buying RVP.

He's ripped apart Bayern (with one of the world's best midfielders, Schweinsteiger) more than once, people underrating him some. Look at the impact Cisse had coming from the Bundesliga, Kagawa was the best attacking midfielder in that league and has the potential to be Silva level.

Not a chance we would sign him for that, if Mancini was willing to pay that much now he would have just payed it a couple of years ago too

I am not so sure. We clearly have infinite funds available, that is beyond question. At the same time, we have an eye on the FFPR and also we don't want to be taken for chumps with rip-off prices. So we have been playing a cautious, measured and pretty conservative transfer window.

On the other hand we are not owned by a guy who will be happy to see us come 2nd this year, or god forbid 3rd. And the Sheikh has seen how much money Chelsea have pumped in and now United have signed RVP.

It would not surprise me in the slightest if the Sheikh had called Khaldoon and said "the brakes are off, sign whoever you want at whatever cost".

Only a minor point but sometimes too much credence is paid to the fee involved. Once amortisation has taken place it can make a reasonable jump in fee seem pretty insignificant.

40mil over 5 year contract = 8mil per season.

30mil over same = 6mil per season.
