has he signed a new contract with Roma yet? If not then a pre contract in Jan and free transfer in summer would be brilliant business, absolutely class player

The impression that I get is that it is pretty much nailed on.

Mancini ready to pounce as Manchester City target De Rossi remains in limbo at Roma

On the lookout: Mancini could be set to add to his Manchester City squad

Roberto Mancini is keen to add Daniele de Rossi to his Manchester City midfield.

De Rossi's contract at Roma runs out at the end of the season and he has become increasingly frustrated by negotiations on a new deal.

The 28-year-old, who was born in the Italian capital, once said he never intended to play for anyone else - despite interest from Chelsea, Real Madrid and others.

However, he now intends to seek a move abroad if a new contract cannot be agreed and Mancini has opened the door to a move to City.

'I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in Rome,' said Mancini. 'But if he doesn't sign, City will be ready.'

Losing De Rossi for nothing would be a disaster for Roma, as director Bruno Conti recently claimed that his club had once turned down a £60million bid from Chelsea for him.

AC Milan and Zenit St Petersburg are also interested in the Italy regular, but would not be able to match City's financial muscle.

De Rossi said this week: 'Things are at a standstill. There's no hectic rush to get things sorted, but it is a little frustrating to be getting to January like this.

'If I was to leave Roma then my first choice would be to go and play football abroad. But if such a move couldn't be agreed then I'd have to look to Italy. I couldn't just quit football.'

Again i dont understand this "Couldnt match citys financial muscle" we're top of the league now, we will be qualifying for chumps league year upon year, we dont need to be paying someone a bucket load, yes he will be paid handsomnly put journo's need to get away from the money tag now.

Would be a quality signing whether it be replacing NDJ or younger legs on Gaz Baz, or not just add to the squad.

Wages would be a fortune becuase we'd be getting him on a free, we're talking about a £25-30m player on a free. He's going to want a huge signing on bonus and top wages. The trick for City would be to work out what is fair allowing him to get top wages because he's free but not paying him so much we aren't getting any benefit from the deal. If you assume we pay him £10m extra over 4 years (£50k/week on top of what we'd usually pay a top DM) we get a £30m player for £10m.

There will probably be a bunch of clubs queueing up to sign him. I'd be very surprised if Arse, Chelsea and the Scum weren't in for him, they could all do with a class DM who can pass. If we try to chisel too much he'll just go to someone else. We may have a slight advantage with BM being boss with Balo and Kolarov both ex-Serie A players but at the end of the day money talks :p.

You would have to be talking best part of a £5m signing-on fee plus £200k a week over next years for him to make the move.

Having said that, in January, probably get him for less than £10m, Roma couldn't take the risk.

If his real value is £25-30m, it's a no-brainer

Possibly why we are in no rush to sort a big money deal for NDJ?

I was under the impression that NDJ had been offered a big raise but turned it down.
