Dear Atheists..

But yesterday’s events in Southport show what happens when each has their own moral code. Morality has to be based on the common good and in some way that, for me at any rate, depends on trying to fathom what the purpose of this great big universe is. I find it very difficult to rationalise the thought that this massive and intricately complex universe does not have a purpose.
Oh dear.

Wrong wrong wrong. Religious propaganda. Do you really swallow the idea ( for eg) that “Thou shalt not murder” is Judaeo Christian? The death penalty, the removal of rights from other religions, the legal disability of women: just a few examples of English law through the ages. Do you really think these were accepted religious beliefs? Accepted by whom?
I'm afraid so (accepted by the majority of citizens btw)
what's that got to do with anything?
the limits of petitionary prayer?

pretty much all in the Old Testament mate...'an eye for an eye'..thou shalt not worship false idols'...etc...although they did have a fairly enlightened view on Womens rights...(that went backwards)

So each time a church changes its beliefs, the majority of citizens magically change theirs? Discuss in the light of the Marriage Act 1740 et seq.

They predate the Old Testament or at least the then knowledge of the OT.

Religious morals are stuck in the times they were written down. If we go by them, we should be getting our slaves from the surrounding nations still. Beating them ...but not to death. Taking their children to OWN for life.

you've got worse over the years mate

the limits of petitionary prayer hmm i wonder why that is.................

i love the fact that theists get themselves embroiled in philosophical dogma time and time again trying to explain away why nothing is there. its funny

Not sure what you mean about changes of belief, not doing that is generally the idea of a religion. Hardwicke's act did certainly did negatively impact the income of of Gretna Green blacksmiths among others deprived of their marriage making role in favour of clerics.

Not quite so funny as something trying to explain it's nothing.

Oral traditions often predate their written form quite significantly. Access to the thoughts of all pre-literate cultures is of course tricky.

putting words into my mouth again mate never said its nothing never have

you say its a deity in particularly one from a biblical perspective, and in all this time you have never given one tiny shred of evidence to support your point of view apart from whats contained within one old story book

like i say you have gotten worse over the years mate

My gran used to say , "religion never kept anybody". I haven't a clue what it means she wasn't religious what so ever, so I think it was meant to be derogatory and I have followed in her footsteps as a fully paid up member of the atheists club.

Thought you were a 'Big Banger' and as an inveterate atheist that commits you to something came from nothing.
I'm taken with the view that if there was a way of proving God exists in the sense you suggest it would make our free will choices in this vale of soul-making just a prudential exercise.

It only costs your soul, it's not like that's worth anything

I think she could have meant religion couldn't be relied on as a source of income but the vast wealth accumulated by many churches and their clergy rather counts against her argument though.

i'm open minded to creation mate, but the least plausible is the one you present and that is my issue

you are entirely convinced that it is the truth, but through indoctrination(you may say not, another debate another day) you are unable to think otherwise

so whenever you say thus i will challenge you, that's the nature of reasoning

the mere fact you allude to its not easy to prove such tells me smoke and mirrors are at play again
