A Manchester-born striker, John "Jackie" Swindells started his career in the youth teams of Manchester City, gaining a place in England's u-18 national team. He made his debut in the English league with Blackburn Rovers in 1957, but didn't have much chances to play. After having changed many teams (most notably Accrington Stanley and Workington), he went to ply his trade at Altrincham FC in 1964. He would go on to play 229 matches, scoring 195 goals for the team. He ended his career at Radcliffe Borough in 1974. He died in his sleep on June, 23rd, in his house in Cornwall. Altrincham FC gave his name to the prize given yearly to the best youth player.
