The first 0-0 against QPR sticks out in my mind for a save by Joe Corrigan that was out of this world. QPR were running Liverpool close for the title that year and were playing some brilliant stuff. Don Givens (I think) took a corner for them on the left wing at the Platt Lane end. It arrowed to the back of the box where David Webb came in like a train and sent a towering header so hard it was surely going to break the net. Then Big Joe instantly changed his position and dived backwards, almost parallel with the ground and somehow reached to palm the ball over the bar. Everyone applauded, including the players on both sides and Webb went over to shake Joe’s hand. Sadly, no tv cameras there, so it never passed into ‘Istry..first game i actually remeber live
6th December 1975 . Man City 0 QPR 0 . Sat in the platt lane with my older brother.
funny enough. i went to the same fixture the following year .. which also ended 0-0
My first ever memory of City was being placed by my mother in front of our neighbour’s TV set in her flat downstairs (we didn’t have a tv!) and being told ‘Look at the tv, see if you can see your Dad at the football’ with the Old Man and my uncles all being at Wembley for the 1956 Final against Birmingham.
My first game was three years later, at home to then Champions Wolves. We put 4 past them.. but they put 6 past Bert Trautmann! My introduction to ‘typical City’ that day.. loved it ever since!
