Derek

Re: Derek

That's the thing here, we're slating it as we expect more from Gervais based on his previous work.

The highlight of the show was Karl Pilkington and even then he was just rehashing stuff he's said in the radio shows/podcasts from the past decade.

I just thought it was lazy and the final episode was incredibly transparent with it's laying on the sentiment.

At times it reminded me of Waterloo Road, although far less sleazy.

Ah you see I haven't watched the last two. I thought the one with the daughter claiming the ring was good. It seemed like Pilkington said what we all think we should at times but don't for the easy life. The day trip at the seaside was good as well.

Re: Derek

This was one of the most ham-fisted, contrived tv shows i've ever seen. The fact it's from the same person who gave us The Office and Extras beggars belief. Almost all of the characters, Derek especially, are utterly flimsy and we're bashed over the head time and again with what we should think of them. Villains are introduced for no reason at all other than to give the episode a villain , and are written with the subtlety of a brick, oh yeah I forgot you've just "left the veil of irony behind" haven't you rick? Well in that case there goes any saving grace for using footage of the old people when they were younger. What was the point in that? To show that old people were once people like me and you? To evoke emotion? Well congratulations, you evoked pity out of me. Pity for what a terrible writer you have become. Also, where exactly was the story arc in this show? There isn't one. Incredible.

Karl was good.

Excellent post. And only your fourth, that's not me being patronising btw. You should post more.

Wrote this for the Sabotage Times this morning which kinda echoes Sam's thoughts.

Excellent. I could see a few nods to this thread on there... nicely put and it's uncanny you should mention Byker Grove, or should that be canny? Anyway, summed it up nicely.

Re: Derek

Alright, alright. I finally got round to watching the last two episodes and agree they were pretty shite. The collective love-in for Derek in the last one was pathetic. I thought the character 'Kevin' was shit all the way through to be honest but I enjoyed the series up until the last two episodes.
