Derek

I still don't get it. Gervais' juvenile gurning and overacting kills the character, Merchant is fucking useless and Karl is well past his sell by date. It simply doesn't add up to much at all.

As I've previously said, Peter Kay's Leonard nailed this area of comedy in less than an hour, more than ten years ago. Nailed it. Say what you want about his garlic bread arena shite, That Peter Kay Thing was excellent. Gervais and Merchant are a decade out and failing badly.
Even though Steve Merchant has nowt to do with this he is a fucking brilliant comedy writer.

Re: Derek

If Gervais was unknown to the comedy sitcom scene then this show would have landed on it's arse. It is incredibly cheesy.

As previous posters have mentioned, Peter Kay nailed this style of comedy with Leonard who was actually based on a real person and the episode was bloody funny.

Re: Derek

Wow that last episode didn't so much hit me over the head with sentimentality as lie me down and rape me with sentimentality overload soundtracked by bedwetting superstars Coldplay.

I like Gervais and Derek had promise but it was quite trite in places. The rapping episode made me want to die though, it killed something inside me that I can never ever get back. Ever. Ever.

You mean you didn't like the urban youth who 'got old peeps... cos they fought in real wars'?? it was beautiful to watch, I bet Tennessee Williams wishes he was alive today to steal that storyline.

I was expecting Robin Williams to charge into the room at any moment in floods of tears.

Very funny programme. Let's not feel the need to dissect yet another show on telly because some of us think we're too intelligent for it.

So you just want a thread of posts which say 'Very funny'?

I'm a fan of Gervais but with this he's let me down.

If that's due to my massive intelligence then that's not my fault.

No, I enjoyed Toma's post on the previous page because he explains what he sees as wrong about the programme. Others just post "it's shit" or "it's not funny" but fail to explain why. It's usually the same posters again and again who state how shite something is but can't explain why. They're the same ones who tell us all how ridiculously easy to make Oasis' music was but can't tell us about their own musical masterpieces.

I've enjoyed Derek so far (still got the last two episodes on the planner) because me and the missus get very little time to watch anything together and try to find mutual programmes. I don't think it's as good as the Office but it's not bad. The writing on crabs scene the other week was extremely funny. I can see flaws in the programme but if I hated the first episode, I wouldn't have carried on with the rest.

I hear what you're saying Kev, a critique is fine if you can explain your reasons for disliking something. To just say something is "shite" is lazy and lacks intelligence, though sometimes it sums up perfectly what you have just witnesssed e.g. Miranda, Eastenders or One Direction. Those c•nts don't merit more than a one word review.

"Derek" for me was disappointing considering it was written by Gervais, who I rate. I've given my reasons on other pages further down the thread and can't be arsed re-quoting them.
(I know your post isn't aimed at me btw).
