EXCLUSIVE: Real Madrid beat Manchester City to £20m signing of Portsmouth midfielder Diarra
By Ashley Gray
Real Madrid have agreed the £20million signing of Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra, Sportsmail understands.
The Spanish champions are on the verge of completing a deal for the 23-year-old, who had been Manchester City boss Mark Hughes' No 1 target for the January transfer window.
Hughes hoped to sign the cultured holding midfielder after fears that 35-year-old Dietmar Hamann was no longer up to the job.
But City's £18m interest in France international was blown out of the water by Real, who appear ready to back new boss Juande Ramos in the transfer market.
The former Tottenham boss has a long list of targets, which are thought to include wingers Ashley Young, of Aston Villa, and Aaron Lennon, of Spurs. He also wants a striker, but a defensive midfielder was an absolute priority.
Holland striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will arrive from Ajax in January but Ramos asked Real sporting director Predrag Mijatovic to make the move for Diarra after assessing the hole left in midfield by a knee injury to Mali international Mahamadou Diarra and health problems associated with Ruben de la Red. Both will miss the rest of the season.
It is understood that Manchester City were ready to offer Lassana Diarra more money than Real Madrid, but it appears the former Arsenal and Chelsea player will not even get chance to talk to the Eastlands hierarchy.
Former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Hamann has struggled for consistency this season and Hughes had tried Vincent Kompany in the holding midfield role this season, though the Belgium international is more comfortable at centre-half.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was also thought to be keen on teaming up again with his former Portsmouth star, but Real are expected to agree in the next 48 hours a four-and-a-half-year deal with Diarra, who is attractive to Ramos because he can also play right back.
Real had not wanted to pay more than £9m for a player who cost Portsmouth £5.5m during the last January transfer window, but the Manchester City effect has forced an inflated fee.
City, owned by the wealthy Abu Dhabi United Group, have huge funds to spend next month and signed Brazil forward Robinho from Real for a British record £34m on September 1.
