Diarra update: Madrid face competition from City

In spite of Real Madrid's confidence that they are close to agreeing a deal with Portsmouth for the 23 year old midfielder Lassana Diarra (here), it appears that a late intervention by Manchester City could thwart the La Liga side from getting their man.

As we reported earlier, Diarra had been on the verge of travelling to the Spanish capital today, but has been told by Portsmouth Executive chairman Peter Storrie to postpone finalising a deal with Real Madrid: at least until he has listened to an offer from Manchester City who have pledged to beat any offer and package offered by the Spanish champions.

If Madrid wanted to pay 9M for Diarra and now they are looking at having to pay 20M to get him I dont see them agreeing to pay it.
Ramos is only under contract until the end of the season, which suggests some reservations from Calderon and co about his long term viability as manager - will Madrid really back him to the hilt in the january window? Yes they have signed Huntelaar for a similar fee but he is not a Ramos signing - Diarra would be.

At £20m I'd rather we look elsewhere anyway. Good player, but probably double what he is worth.
