Did we really get it wrong?

I've been thinking about something else this morning. I suspect one of the main reasons I'm not that bothered is because the French commentators were also under the impression that City needed to win by 3 clear goals. So throughout the match at no point did top spot seem imminent. If I'd known after Milner's goal that one more would've seen us top, I may well have been screaming for Aguero, and I may well have at the end of the game been pissed off. Because I was always under the impression we needed to win by three clear goals, by the time it was clarified that we only needed one more, we'd already won and I'd already sat through the last ten minutes where I was simply praying that we got to the final whistle with the victory intact. Hence it just doesn't seem to matter to me.

To be honest that's fair enough. I only knew because the SKY commentators told us and then it was weird watching those last 20 minutes. Like I said I sent a message to a mate wondering what was happening and why we weren't trying to get another. Still, I wasn't that unhappy until I realised it was actually a cock up. No-one is suggesting we would have scored another or that it is easy to put 4 past Bayern. What we are saying is it was a cock up that prevented us from having the opportunity to at least attempt it.

We didn't try to score again?

Negredo's effort?

Do you realise what shit you are coming out with?

Oh hello Mancini outer.

We had one chance in the last twenty five minutes. In the previous twenty five we'd totally outplayed them and they were on the ropes.

Thanks for your contribution though. Please continue.

C'mon lads there's no need for this to descend into a Mancini bitchfest.

I can see both points of view and I really don't understand why everyone can't. Yes it was in hindsight a fuck up if it turns out that nobody in City's side knew that one more goal was enough. However it's not a fuck up which should be taking any shine off what was an incredible performance by our effectively our reserve team + Silva and Zaba.

This is exactly the kind of subject where we should all agree to disagree have a group hug and then move on to discussing how many goals Arsenal's exhausted first team will ship at the Etihad. :)

Not trying to sound clever but I find it difficult to believe the fans didn't know that it was head to head and that 2-4 beats 1-3 let alone the Manager and the players.

It's basic stuff. The Manager shouldn't need telling.

Unbelievable result though.

General consensus is that Bayern slacked at 2-0. Once they realised that 1 goal would lose top spot, Pep put a midfielder on for a striker. This defensive switch coupled with the teams increased focus in the final 20 minutes was why we created less.

That, and Silva going off, who couldn't play any more.

So basic some Bayern players didn't know, large swathes of the media didn't know, City's bench seemingly didn't know.

Lets face it, it was anything but "basic stuff" unless you've got an unhealthy fascination with UEFA's archaic Champions League rules and regulations.

All joking aside, I agree. Everyone knew that the head-to-head results decided who finished top so surely as an extension of that if the aggregate scores between the 2 sides are level then it comes down to away goals.

Weird that some of the Bayern players weren't up to speed on it either.

Indeed. I'm out
