I do have to laugh when the "Engineer" epithet is used to somehow enhance his reputation. I note that Iain Dowie was never held in such high regard.

In Simon Jordan's excelllent autobiography 'Careful What You Wish For' he spills the beans on Dowie...
He says when he interviewd Dowie he was dazzled by a fantastic Powerpoint Presentation that hit exactly
the right points, the strengths and weaknesses of the team, the future objectives and milestones required
to get where they need to be. 3 month plans, 1 year plans, 3 year plans the lot etc etc and Jordon promptly hired him.

He then found out later that Dowie used this exact same presentation loads of times at every interview both before and after his job with Palace
and simply changed the name of the team in the presentation!

I remember one of the Villa stewards saying that and we overheard the chat amongst the other stewards.

'I've overheard some bollockings in there over the years but that has to be in the top 4 or 5, a few of the Man City players came out and looked as if they just had an accident in their pants, he was RUMBLING'.

Oh fuck no! Please tell me he's not shouting at our players? Please tell me its not true?
You know how delicate these precious little souls are - they really don't like it. It really does upset them. Its take them months and months
to get over 'the damge' this does to their ego's and self esteem.
If our new manger keeps shouting at them then he is toast! The players will all run off to the DoF and threaten to leave!
Oh fuck - better start looking for another new manager me thinks - one that doesn't shout...

It's perfectly acceptable to shout at the players when necessary as long as it is kept in house as this seems to be. If he was criticising players to the press then i'd be worried.

I do wonder if some of the people that seem obsessed with wanting the manager to shout at players actually have much people management experience?

Managing a professional sports team certainly has differences to managing people in an office, for example, but the fundamentals of managing people and human nature still apply. Footballers are not aliens.

I think it is far more appropriate for a football manager to express his displeasure very demonstratively to his players than it is for a managers in other situations but frequent use of the tactic is likely to make people switch off and is just not a very sophisticated approach.

Agreed - The skill is knowing when to shout and when not to (which is often more important) for example most unfortunately with RM he shouted so much that they just stopped listening. MP is very adept at man management and if he felt it necessary to hand out a few home truths on saturday then so be it. I support that as long as it does not become a constant. As a fan the one thing that gets on your goat has to be coasting through games because they feel a win is straight forward. Better to nip this in the bud now. Onward and upward OB1 good point.

We should be careful about the Mail's report of an alleged dressing-room incident apparently leaked by an eavesdropping Villa Park steward. The Mail's language-'' hairdryer'','' set it to full blast'' and '' rollicking'' -suggest that Pellegrini bawled the team out without the slightest restraint.
In his post-match interview with MOTD, the strength of Pellegrini's feelings are conveyed by his comment '' in five minutes we threw into the trashcan all we did in the match''. But he's totally calm as he uses those words.
the important point about MP being a civil engineer is that he worked in a reconstruction project in Chile after the massive earthquake in 1985.Surely a man who'd faced up to something like that would be able to get his points over strongly enough without the need to yell and scream at his players in a counter-productive way!

Glad he gave them a bit of a bollocking if true. Even though the performance wasn't the worst in the world I've been worried he's a bit too nice so far. Need to start getting results and hopefully this bollocking will get everyone right on their game.

Occassionly the players need a rollicking , it may have been individual mistakes in the Villa and Cardiff games, but it's a team game. On talkshite this morning , Warnock said how he would psyche his team up when playing against a team of "primadonnas" or "big time charlies". This is how a lot of the managers in the league see us, as a team who don't like being got at and this puts our players on the back foot and makes them beatable. This has changed over the last couple of seasons and now we dominate teams a lot more, however the other thing Warnock said which I agree with is that some City players in the side act as though going 1-0 up the opposition will fold and give up the game. I think this comment is certainly true of a few of our players, and Pellegrini picking up on Dzeko staying on the floor when either he is fouled or thinks he has been fouled is indicative of the attitude of some members of the team. If Pellegrini points this weakness out to them then that is fine by me, as has been said already, constuctive occassional rollickings are fine, if required, and as long as they stop results like this happening in the future. QPR away 2 years ago could easily have been a result like the Villa one, and the home game against QPR in the title winning season was almost the same outcome as Saturday. Maybe the players minds are on Wednesday, but each game should be taken in order and is the most important target until it's over. Nasty is always very cool when in possession, (he reminds me very much of J Boateng) but he does sometimes commit fouls when things don't go to plan. He's still young and will learn I'm sure, but he isn't at his best at the moment and maybe 1/2 a game at a time would be better for him until his fitness is back, and give Lescott a bit of playing time alongside Vinny. I do agree that maybe Hart should be told he is in competition for his place in the team again, just like with Kasper when Sven was in charge, (7 or 8 games each to keep them both on their toes).

Why were you in the tunnel...are you a steward or summat?

Nah I was hunting for an autograph for my nephew (which I got eventually, cheers Yaya), but the stewards sometimes come out to chat with waiting supporters.
