Funny how nobody is complaining about 442! Would love to see Biny and Nacho next time Kun is injured instead of Bony on his own
I've complained about us using 442, and the complaints weren't to do with us playing 442. It's to do with when we play 442 with our usual players it ends up with Sterling as a 2nd striker (better on the wing for me), Silva as a LW (clearly best at CAM), KdB as a RW (best at CAM for me) & Yaya in a 2 man midfield (clearly an issue against good teams). Today the 442 had Kelechi & Aguero as strikers (both strikers), Navas & Sterling as wingers (both wingers) & Delph/Fernando as CM's (not sure Nando could play this role in a tougher match though).

People were calling for 4-2-3-1 because we could have Silva as CAM, a winger in Navas on the wing & whomever on the left; whilst also providing an extra man in midfield to help out Yaya's deficiencies.

Now we have KdB I don't think 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 can work with Silva & KdB & Yaya all starting (i.e. I'd suggest dropping 1 or more for a balanced line up).
Yes, but it falls down in Europe against the top teams. We just need to be tactically flexible.
Oh no doubt, I'm not suggesting we play 4-4-2 at all. I've just moaned (a fair bit) recently that we should be playing our players in their best positions, it's nonsense having Silva & KdB as our wingers. If we play a 442 like today with everyone in natural positions it works well, if we play 4231 like our first 5-6 matches with everyone in natural positions it works well (no KdB at the time). In Europe I love the 4-3-3 we went for against Sevilla; again everyone in natural positions, no KdB & no Silva, rather Navas & Sterling played as the wingers & it was great.
I agree, but this means some high profile players are going to be on the bench. I don't see how you get Yaya, Silva on KDB into the team.
Yep, as I had already typed in this response to another post I don't think we can have those 3 in a team in the formations we attempt to play.

Then you don't.

Part of the managers charter is to put the best side out against the appropriate opposition and have some idea how the opposition will line up.

You manage the squad notwithstanding injuries and form and suspension will impact.

How Yaya should be anything but an impact player off the bench now for a few games at least is beyond me.

You don't start Silva and KVB in the same side if you play Silva behind the striker and KVB out wide better to have Silva as a striker if KVB is out wide or behind the striker.

Today Norwich played 4-402 which suited our set up today.

Fucking hell.

You complain when he doesn't play the kid, and then when he does, you dont enjoy the fact you got what you wanted, you just fucking whine about how he might not play him next week.

And for the record, last time he had a good cup game, he started him in the league.
Not complaining just think bony has had his chances and hasn't really impressed where as nacho when little time he has been on has impressed, just don't think bony is cut out playing for us...

I wouldn't start getting over excited about 442. It suited today because we left a few out. I doubt it will be here to stay once he wants to bring them back. Not in today's manner anyway.

A 4132, maybe.

Well done manuel today it seems the players picked were all in the position that suits, a major light bulb moment for him no doubt, looking forward to seeing sterling and navas wide for the rest of the season

Nobody complains about formations. People complain about choosing the same formation regardless of opponents and then playing ageing slow midfielders in inappropriate roles within it.

442 is the right formation for some situations, particularly with solid midfielders and a second striker who can put in a proper shift.

Actually this is incorrect and we have plenty of people on this forum and in the fanbase at large who believe 4-4-2 is an inherently inferior formation that smacks of Mike Bassett, flat caps and glam rock
