Discussion: Manuel Pellegrini 2015/16

perhaps Pellegrini has had the rug pulled from under him by this Guardiola speculation. He may go elsewhere in the end, but everyone thinks he's coming here. Perhaps that explains why the club seems to be in limbo. Did it feel like we were playing to go top of the table tonight? It was like a pre-season game. Lifeless

Because he blotted out Lukaku? Who else played well?

That was really poor. I am surprised you are happy with that. We had a decent 15 minutes spell midway in the 2nd half but that was it.
I was impressed with Everton. We showed some steel tonight against good opposition.
Motm? You're right, Nobody was outstanding, just all competent tonight.

Strange decision tonight not starting Delph instead of Fernando....as Delph is similar to fernandinho with his engine.
Why not start silva when he had his rest v Norwich?
Why only use one sub at our busiest period of the season?
Hope we can put tonight to bed by giving palace a good hiding.

At least Manuel is predictable.

Thank fuck he's off for next season -or the likes of Kelechi and our other young upcoming stars who are starved of minutes on the pitch would be banging on the door asking to leave.

Can someone tell the manager that it's fucking pointless in Navas blindly crossing the ball into the box with five Everton players and only Sergio to aim for.

At least the scousers in red evened things up a tad for us.

A point is disappointing, but not the end of the world, but I was very disappointed with the performance. It didn't look like we wanted to win that game. I am sure we did, but it didn't look like it at all. Did the players not really believe in the plan, whatever it was? The 1st half was instantly forgettable and the 2nd half we got to the byline repeatedly. Almost every attack ended up with City crossing from the deadball line but there was no one there.

I think Pellegrini is losing grip. Strange subs.

You do realise we're still in 4 cups?
He's gonna have to do some serious fucking up to mess this shite, tedious, boring non competitive season.
I'm bored to fuckin tears..

For how much longer? We look miles away from premier league winners, we've got the play the same team as tonight but with a 1 goal deficit in the cup, the champions league we've got virtually zero chance of winning and is just a question of how many favourable draws can we get so we can stay in it and reach a respectable stage.

I said one of the greatest and no I'm not confusing anything.

What's he done to make him one of the greatest ever? He won the league and cup with the best team in the league in his first year, it wasn't a particularly spectacular achievement It was good and i'm grateful to him for it but he simply did what was expected of him given the team he inherited. He then got found out last year and failed to adapt for the entire season showing he lacks tactical nous and showing time and time again he's a weak in game manager. This season, again he's been given the strongest team in the league and is performing poorly with it.

Where does he excel as a manager? He doesn't deal with transfers etc so we can discount that side of his job, His tactics are ridiculously predictable and rarely changes so he's not this "engineer" he was supposed to be when he came in. As i already said, rarely makes good in game decisions and seemingly has his subs planned out before the games even started. Is he a good man manager/motivator? Correct me if i'm wrong but I can't think of a single player who's improved under Pellegrini, it's arguable a fair few have regressed under his tactics and with the team trotting around the pitch with no urgency until we're either behind or into the last 10 minutes i'd suggest he's not very good at motivating them either. So what's left? What makes him a great manager?

He's a calming yes man that won't rock the boat or create headlines. That was what we needed for the season after Mancini, but we should of done what Real Madrid did and got rid of him after the first year in charge

I don't see how you can think we didn't look like we wanted to win it. We threw a lot at them but they either defended well or Howard produced a decent save. I saw signs of some determination and cohesion tonight.

May take some stick for this but...

When I saw the team selection I was skeptical of our engine room but I think Pellegrini anticipated this match well. Everton's away form really isn't bad at all, and they play a good counter attack. Had they set up to try and destroy the midfield battle, then Fernando and Toure could have been in trouble, but as Pellegrini expected, they conceded the centre to maintain their solid away record.

Sterling really helped make the system work, with his switches between midfield and striker areas. He was often coming deep for our midfield to set off attacks with, but would sometimes stretch play if on the opposite side to the football, making more room for Aguero and the midfield to operate. Aguero worked well in this regard also.

When out of possession, there was some signs of concerted, pressure on the ball carrier in our own half, which was good to see. (Sadly not enough, but still worth crediting.)

All in all, I think Pellegrini got this one right, tactically, but our finishing has let us down. (all credit to Tim Howard and the Everton defense who've been solid on their travels.) Unlucky City.
If he had got it right tactically and chosen the correct team then we would have won.

The signs were there 2nd half. Not so
Much in the first. We can't really afford to drop any more points at home and that won't be easy with the games we have.

Getting past these in the cup won't be as easy as people think either.
