If you lower the bar, you decrease your own rights, and those of all other people. If you lower the bar with political aims, opponents always make capital of the atmosphere of lowered expectations and will quickly show you how ignoring convention and so forth plays even better for them.
I'm not sure how long it takes people to twig. What has happened in the last decade? Are we "winning"? Or seeing problems get worse.
