Ditching Sky

Discovery is big enough to run it's own network and service easily, they probably know they are that strong now so will have been relishing telling companies like sky to go fuck themselves. Great network i should add, discovery science is a very good chan, always summat good on that.

Pretty huge news sky have been kicked into touch by Discovery. For a lot of blokes it is a few matches and discovery network, they watch nothing else so now for a great many it is a monthly live footy sub, a 50 quid live footy sub.

I've been looking on the sky forums and people are seriously pissed off. A lot of customers who have been with Sky for years are saying enough is enough and they are fucking them off.

In an almost unprecedented move, Discovery Networks UK & Ireland let rip tonight in a scathing press release which revealed that negotiations with Sky have broken down and the two parties have failed to reach a new carriage agreement for their portfolio of channels.

As a result of that, Discovery has stated that unless a new agreement is reached shortly, they will pull all their channels from the Sky platform and NOW TV. There are no changes to BT and Virgin Media customers with whom Discovery has separate long-term agreements in place. What caused the negotiations to break down? The key issues seem to be entirely financial.

Discovery’s position is that as an “independent broadcaster”, they believe Sky is not offering a “fair price” for their channels. “Sky is using what we consider to be its dominant market position to further its own commercial interest over those of viewers and independent broadcasters”, said Susanna Dinnage, Managing Director, Discovery Networks UK and Ireland. Specifically, Discovery says they are paid less now than they were ten years ago, despite the cost of a Sky subscription increasing and the fact that Discovery has increased its share of viewing on the Sky platform by more than 20% in that same time period.

Take that Rupert.

A mate of mine pays nearly a ton a month for the full Sky package (broadband/telephone) with multi-room. Absolutely mental.

Their football coverage is dog s**t at the best of times. I can't even stand watching it in a pub.

For anyone in contract with Sky but looking to bail (or renegotiate) then the price will increase in March which will trigger an option to cancel without penalty.

You could also use Discovery leaving if trying to get a better price, the full list of Discovery channels are: Animal Planet, Discovery HD, Discovery History, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Science, Discovery Shed, Discovery Turbo, DMAX, Eurosport1, Eurosport2, Investigation Discovery, Quest and TLC.

Great post and a fantastic reminder that customers no longer have to bend over and take it. Sky, BT all of them, when they put prices up use it as an opportunity to walk away.

Strange you should mention BT, theirs goes up in April (yes, really) although they are adding Boxnation by the end of March (the full 24/7 service).
