Do you really believe the league is over...?

If we look at it the other way round & we were 16 points behind Guardiola's team, who had actually won more points during their recent 'struggling' period, with a whole bunch of injuries, than we did during the same period, what chances would this forum be giving us, of catching them ?

I was thinking that the other day.

For the last couple of seasons, there was a “We can still win the League” thread, that usually surfaced around February, and basically insisted that if we all believed, and didn't give up, then Leicester, or Chelsea, might suddenly lose 5 in a row.

I wonder how those people view the current situation.

I don't think we were being ironic then, just hopeful
In 2012 we didn't sing it until the end of the Newcastle game in 2014 until we scored the second against the far from happy hammers

And so I do think we should be singing about winning the league now, let's enjoy it for once.

Hopeful? You must have been able to drink more than me on a Saturday then, 4/6 pints of Boddingtons before arriving at Maine Road and 3/4 Greenalls whilst there and dependent on what happened a few Caffreys afterwards never made me that optimistic.

To be fair I think once I started smoking cannibis I never worried about relegation and thought we might win a derby in my lifetime.

I am more than sure we won't get relagated.
So let's not start singing too soon.
Remember purple nose and them rags at Sunderland singing too soon.
Auegro OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Provided he players don't go lazy arsed on us like Chelsea, I can actually see huge room for improvement next season. We could actually go up a level this season when we get a full squad back (we will need to imo to compete in he CL, as we are missing too many great positions & letting in too many daft goals at the moment).

Imo we can't improve on KDB's contribution &I think it's actually unfair to expect him to maintain that level, every season. So he is fully entitled to be 'not quite as good' especially after a world cup. But Sterling, Sane, Jesus & even Aguero, are capable of much more (as we saw 2nd half with Serge yesterday) Laporte, Stones are capable of much more, if Bernard Mendy isn't an improvement on Delph, Zinchenko or Danilo, it would be something of a shock, Bernardo Silva is becoming the terrifying player we saw last season.

Maybe Mahrez (or similar) Fred, plus a host of kids here & loaned out.

One position: Fernadinho. Gundogan can't do his job & Fred can't win headers like he constantly does. That can't be ignored. Someone has to do it, if Fern isn't playing & he can't possibly keep this up at his age.

Sort that, & it just needs the players to continue putting in the same effort (which is tough). But in that case, with Pep running the show we are miles better than our rivals, whoever they sign, imo.
Going lazy arsed is a big deal though. Happened under two title-winning managers. I don't think it will happen under Guardiola or Kevin de Bruyne but it will be a question mark until we see. Next season will also be influenced by how we end this. In CL disappointment, Cup disappointment or a triumphant season. We need an aura around Guardiola.

Another thing that helps immensely is the state of the rest of the Premier league.

When we were 8 or 9 points behiind, some of us would be thinking 'ok, IF, we do our own job, there's a small chance Chelsea might lose a couple, then pressure could kick in & you never know'.

12 points ? Nah.

We can't assume that the other teams will be anything other than stronger next season. There is no good reason for any of them (apart from Arsenal) not to be better.

But, Utd were supposed to be that team, this season. They are fortunate imo, to be where they are considering the level of many of their performances.

I would actually expect a dip in level from City next season, if we had a 'normal' B list manager. But I think that under this guy, the star players will have to be on their toes, to stay int he team next season & they know it.

As much as I think it's over I will be more confident if we can take minimum 4 points from next 2 games oh a Newcastle taking something today.

It's done. Time to focus on the other 3 tournaments and rotate to prioritise those. That's the luxury the gap affords us, until such a time as it doesn't.

IMO you use the squad around those weeks and the A team play in FA Cup, the final and the champs league until such a time as the gap closes to 8, which it won't.

Social media pressure from Rag mates is all too much for some and its always about being seen in the right light by some.

Playing the kids is another one and you can tell those getting it in the ear by txt or twitter etc a mile off with what they come out with on here.

You couldn’t be further from the truth because I'm not on any social media (this is as close as it gets) and my rag mates know better than to text about football. And my comments in the Yaya threads show I don’t give a fuck about fitting in.

I just think celebrating now is demeaning our players/managers efforts. They’ve worked their fucking bollocks off this season to put us in this position, by celebrating before the job is done it’s disrespectful of those efforts (in my mind). It’s like we’re saying you don’t need to bother now lads, take it easy, you’ve won it already. I’ll celebrate more than anyone but let’s get the job done first.

I had a check at the fixtures yesterday and thought that if we keep the gap to 13 or at least 11 over the next three fixtures the we are very close.

Leicester 3, Arsenal A & Chelsea H
v
Newcastle A, Chelsea H & Palace A

Utd have to win all 3 games and hope we drop points. If the gap is still 13 points or more after these games then I think they will lost focus and start to concentrate on the Cups.

Worse case scenario. The gap closers to about 10 points over the next couple of weeks. We have very winnable fixture for the rest of the season apart from the tricky 3 game period at end of March when we play Everton A, Utd H & Spurs A. Compared to Utd who have Swansea and West Brom at home and us away.

If the gap does close this will be the key point to the season. We have two very tough away games compared to 2 easy home games for Utd.

I find it hard to believe though that we will lose all these games. A far likely scenario is that Utd drop points at Newcastle or Palace and the gap stay about the same until our tough period in March where it will probably become closer as we focus on the CL. But we'll win the league comfortably with 3 4 games to go and then drop points as we focus on the CL/FA cup.

Away games looking difficult with poor away form in the league:
Arsenal (1 win in 2 generations) prob drop 2 points
Stoke (hit and miss) prob drop 1.5 points
Everton (win every 5 years tops) prob drop 2 points
Spurs away (can be a real stinker) prob drop 2.5 points
Soton away last day (if we need points they may do to) prob drop 1.5 points.

They are the toughest 5 away WHU probably safe and done well there last season, 9.5 points average drop in the five. The homes games against united and chelsea are also potential point droppers, chelsea last team to win here, united at home last season was a very poor nil nil. I can see us dropping 13 or 14 points but it is whether the other teams can win all their games.

We, as fans of a team 16 points clear plus a massive difference in goal difference, have every fucking right to enjoy it and rub those ****s noses in it. I expect the players to be totally professional and take one game at a time. I doubt Kompany or KDB are texting Lukaku saying it’s over, only lingard would do that if the boot was on the other foot, it’s up to us as fans to enjoy the greatest side EVER to grace English football. We’ve won it, let that sink in and love every fucking minute of it.

There were a few up in ss3 yesterday singing we're gonna win the league. Won't be doing that - I remember being anfield in 2014 and them singing it and it biting them on the arse.

I am not getting excited until after the Chelsea game. Then I will see where we are up to and how many points we need to finish the job, which I have no doubt we will

Good point that. I agree with it except for Stoke, I think we will beat them away. Everton is just such a weird away game for us. I would happy with a point away at Arsenal I think.
