Don't see the problem with closing ticket offices to be honest. Tickets can be bought online or at the machines in the station. Plenty of stations already don't have a ticket office and seem to function without problem.

I haven't been in a ticket office for years though, so maybe I'm missing something.

Your missing the facts.

1)unmanned stations are inherently more dangerous. An app on your phone for tickets is fuck all use if you are being mugged.
2)Not everyone is proficient in using technology especially the older people. If they close the ticket offices my mother for one will have to stop using the railways.

there are loads more but will start with those two

This is my biggest concern, they IMHO need to be manned.

Not sure people sitting in a ticket office are going to do much about a mugging but perhaps I'm wrong.

Most unmanned stations that I know have ticket machines which are fairly straightforward and my 85-year old mother has no problems with them. I do appreciate that it might be more difficult for them though if they aren't used to technology or they don't have someone to show them the ropes.

There are certainly plenty of stations around here that don't have ticket offices. They seem to manage ok. It's the way the world is going. Same with banks closing and having to use ATMs/apps etc.

What about getting on the train without a ticket then and pay when the conductor comes or paying when you get off at your destination if there is someone there to take your payment? If there’s no one around it’s a free trip, bonus.

they want rid of the conductors as well

will his app mean there is a ramp there waiting for him if there is a big stepdown between the train and the platform?

Less muggings when there are people around.

as for the rest, it may be the way its going in the uk, but the countries where they have good railway systems its not. Look at japan for example, reagrded as the most reliable and efficient system in the world.

its only happening in the UK because we are allowing corporate greed to take priority over public service.
