Do you support the RMT?

unexpected item in the baggage area ffs

@Stephen230 so what would happen now if these come in and no staff there, get in train and pay if asked, this was my point, no one can force you to have an app, if the machine is broke then you get on, I’m nit trying to be awkward but have a look at the metro I guarantee 50% don’t pay and take the chance, I don’t by the way I pay.

It shows how much profit the TOCs rake in.

It can take weeks for TVM machines to be fixed because RDG have subcontracted them out to private firms which skim off their profits before doing anything about it.

One of the rural lines I work on I know at least 3 of these machines on unmanned stations have not worked for weeks. One of them is a connection point with long distance services. At weekends the services are full and standing because people have learned they get free travel to and from a major city by ramming them so full the guard can't do revenue. When they reach their destination they all exit via a public right of way that cannot legally be covered by barriers. Our management know this and ignore it.

Not sure people sitting in a ticket office are going to do much about a mugging but perhaps I'm wrong.

Most unmanned stations that I know have ticket machines which are fairly straightforward and my 85-year old mother has no problems with them. I do appreciate that it might be more difficult for them though if they aren't used to technology or they don't have someone to show them the ropes.

There are certainly plenty of stations around here that don't have ticket offices. They seem to manage ok. It's the way the world is going. Same with banks closing and having to use ATMs/apps etc.
Maybe the world might not necessarily be going the right way. It’s happened before...

I’m thinking about Hereford from Chester on Saturday but with advanced tickets. What do I get if the train is cancelled over strikes / overtime? A refund?

It’s making me nervous for matches next season when I book tickets but rely on the train to get me there.

Get the next train. Or if you know in advance the train you're on isn't running, argue that you can catch an earlier train. There's a bit in the ticket T&C that covers that.

But Transport for Wales isn't affected by the ASLEF overtime ban so Chester to Hereford should be OK.

Any idea if York to London is affected by ASLEF on the 19th? I think they're on an overtime ban from 17th to 22nd or similar. That journey forms the first part of 5 legs of a train journey to Prague and if that one doesn't run, I won't be able to make any of the connections.

I wouldn't worry mate - the idea that Sunak will last into next season is like as not for the birds - Labour will at least sit down and talk to the unions thus negating further strikes

Don't see the problem with closing ticket offices to be honest. Tickets can be bought online or at the machines in the station. Plenty of stations already don't have a ticket office and seem to function without problem.

I haven't been in a ticket office for years though, so maybe I'm missing something.
Don't think so.....

In this world of 2023 - how can there be a sensible case for striking to keep ticket offices open - weird!!

Frankly, if you haven't allowed time for a train to be cancelled or a connection missed, it's a risk at the best of times. But LNER seem to have run OK today so 19th would probably be no different.

I assume you've got an Advance ticket rather than an open ticket. If the train is from Edinburgh, you're going to know if it's running over two hours before it's due at York, so just go for an earlier train. Advance ticket conditions 8.4:
"If the train you purchased a ticket for is cancelled or is delayed and you still decide to travel, special arrangements will be made to accommodate you on another train (although a seat cannot be guaranteed)."
