Do you support the RMT?

A lady boarded my train to announce she's been asked by the DFT to survey passengers. One of the questions on the paper is how long can they tolerate strike action?

Against conditions of travel surely.

Ask her to get off at the next stop or you will call the rozzers.

we need more people to join unions - I spent most of my working life in unionised employment and have been able to retire early and earn a decent not stellar but decent income over 42 years of working - I worked in safe, protected and decently funded environments
Everyone should join one where possible regardless of their political affiliations. You don't have to become a woke warrior, at the very least you just have to want the best conditions for yourself.

We've just got an excellent pay rise (beyond 6% and a cost of living bonus) thanks to the union. If we all had the view that it was pointless then the company would likely take advantage of that and we'd get far less or nothing at all.

It does work both ways too and that's why I'll happily give the company a hand as for example we've been doing a lot of overtime lately. Well looked after people are far more likely to bend over backwards to help but treat people like shite and they won't.

Mate, I'm self employed, but if Truss tries to outlaw the ability to strike, I hope the whole nation comes together for a general strike.

They've already taken away some of our right of protest, and they're now threatening to take away our rights to strike, both things are fundamental to democracy.

They're tipping over from bumbling idiots into dangerous idealogue territory.

Hmm. Interesting.
I have just read the link, thank you for posting.
A couple of interesting points mentioned in the article.
“It is not clear what impact this will have on the Company.”
“The Company is not in a good place financially “
Just hope it doesn’t go in the same direction as British Leyland.

Imagine what could happen if she is successful. Next step: Businesses may fire and rehire staff on lower pay and with worse conditions. It's already happened with some companies and if workers are banned from striking then these firms might just as well introduce slavery and no-one would be able to do anything about it.

Shapps is on the BBC.
Hard left unions, RMT and ASLEF colluding to strike on different days, dispute every day on the railways while he's been Transport Sec, the single van canard is up again, digital timesheets (that surely can't be a huge thing?), railway worker pay of 44k average, traindrivers paid on average 60k, not sure why he raised how much less nurses are paid because that just shows that they're underpaid.

BBC: ONS say pay median is 36k, RMT say 33k (including all staff like cleaners, etc).
Shapps: 60k, and they're on strike

Just maybe ASLEF aren't on strike for pay?

But he's written in the Telegraph (of course) on what he demands. He clearly shows no interest in any kind of meeting somewhere in the middle.

It seems to me the scope of essential services that shouldn't be able to strike is getting broader - didn't it used to be just the police and armed forces?

It's already happening and has happened. Look at the 800 seafarers sacked with no notice by P&O and replaced with cheap foreign labour. After much faux outrage and their CEO admitting he'd broken the law and would do it again, nothing has changed. He's probably picked up a huge bonus on top of his £300,000+ a year wage and good skilled men and women are on the scrapheap. Not only that but it has removed forever a good steady job that has helped generations of local people make a living, especially in Dover. People need to be very aware, we are living in dangerous times indeed and everyone's livelihood and rights are at risk.

A few years ago our ex chief (the coward of the Manchester bomb) threatened to sack and rehire the whole of the Manchester fire service if we did not accept new shift patterns, we would be on worse contracts etc etc, thanks to the union (it’s members) we told him bring it on. He backed down and then proceeded to lose the plot, culminating in him shitting out of decisions on 22/5/17, he soon got fucked off after that.
