Does anybody remember shopping here ?

There was another house turned into a souvenir shop further down, unless I'm losing the marbles..... it was there deffo late 70's / very early 80's. I know that as I bought a 'Sid Vicious wouldn't be seen dead watching Man United' badge (and he died Feb 79 so was after that!
Someone must remember it..... Must have been opposite the Main Stand.

You are definitely not losing your marbles. I remember it because on the morning of the 1976 homecoming my dad took me and the family in there and he bought me a brand new silk City scarf with the name of the cup final team on (though I was a little confused and thought Keegan was Kevin not Ged!). It was the first scarf I owned (apart from ones my mam had knitted!) and was very mid 70s. The shop has stuck in my mind vividly since then because, apart from Donaldson's in Hyde, it was the first shop I'd been to that sold City souvenirs. It was in one of the corner houses with a bay window. I think it was Wykeham St but it could have been Wansford. Looking with your back to Maine Road it was the corner house on the left of the street facing towards the city centre, not towards Stockport.

If I remember right it was the one that used to have the large billboard on its side. Not certain when the shop closed, but it definitely wasn't there by the 1980s.

Gary:-

Alex Donaldson's was in Gorton....777 Hyde Road.

Hyde Sports was on the corner of Newton Street/Market Street in Hyde. Number 2 Newton Street.

Later moved to Clarenden Place.

They were both owned by my dad who was a City fan....(He went to the '34 Stoke City 84.569 game as a kid)

He later sold both shops to my relatives and opened up in Bournemouth, Ted MacDougall eventually bought his shop there, around the time he signed for United.

Alex Donaldson was ex City/Scotland in the 20's.

Yes, I know. I've got an old advert for the Gorton shop somewhere. Cheers

It was in an era when adults were always Mr and Mrs. Never knew their Christian names, I just about remember their son, from memory a tall lad with glasses. What relation does that make him to you, Uncle?
Dot was my Grandma's sister. So think that would make him second cousin once removed? Their son is called John, though my dad doesn't think he worked at the chippy...so that might have been someone else.

Thanks Gary, glad I wasn't the only one who could recall the shop!
Funnily enough (as my mum is over for 12 days) I was tidying the apartment up and found this in a box of other stuff.... I threw loads of stuff out when emigrating 4 years ago.... but somehow I still couldn't throw some items away.... this included ha ha ha

I bought another one from the shop ''If pigs could fly, Old Trafford would be an airport''
Think that got tossed out 4 tears ago!

Abb Blue,
I don't think John ever worked in the chippie. The Bateman's always seem to manage on their own even when the Parkside was throwing out, a well run shop.
Now here is a question for you, did John ever save somebody from drowning or am I getting confused in my later years? I remember (I think ) Mr Bateman telling us one night about it but as I say stories seem to merge because I am talking early sixties.
