Does anyone still buy a tv license?

The BBC is funded entirely by the licence fee (C4 receives some funding from the licence fee).

If the BBC didn't exist there would not be a licence fee.

It'll eventually go the way of the dog licence, but until then I'm going to have to put up with having my pocket picked once a year, when the whole thing could be funded by ads.
Yes, but I was merely pointing out that the stance of "I don't watch the BBC so I shouldn't have to pay" was incorrect. You are expected to pay if you watch ANY live tv, presumably for upkeep of the infrastructure.

As I stated previously, you're required to have a TV license in order to watch ANY LIVE TV channels. Not just the BBC.
So because I'm watching the EDS game later which is "Live" on Facebook, I have to have a TV license to legally watch it?

I'm not having this.
I mean for a start, define "live" as there is a typical delay in the broadcast due to factors such as satellite/internet connection, data sending to the receivers and so on (experts can elaborate on this)

My mate Periscopes me later "live" from his fishing trip in Australia.
I watch this.... Illegally because I don't have a license?

Not having it

Pedant :-)

Americans never distinguish between the 'c' and the 's' form, we do; when it's a noun it's licence otherwise it's the 's' form (licensed to kill, but a TV licence).

I can understand needing a licence to kill OHMSS, but I'll never agree that I need to be licensed to watch the telly.

You don’t need a TV Licence if you:

  • never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and
  • never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.
This could be on any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.

Your periscope example is pointless and you knew it. As for the football on facebook, I'd doubt you'd need one, but you never know, knowing this lot.

This has been done to death on here. BBC five live is worth the licence fee alone, imo.

Here's the thing with the BBC; the people on the right think it's biased towards the left. The people on the left think it's biased towards the right. That says to me it does a pretty fucking good job of trying to find a balance.

Long term, the licence fee will be rolled into council tax so it will get paid, one way or another

My mate hasn't paid it for 20 odd years. He got a few to stop as well. You'll always find some blag sites saying you should pay. It's a tough one, if you don't watch the BBC why pay? Do any other stations get a cut? I doubt I'd pay going back home, but then again my old man is a goody goody and already pays up

We pay but I'm not sure why, we never watch BBC or listen to BBC radio, but it seems if you own a TV you HAVE to pay for one or face legal action.

So the licence isn't because you watch/listen to the BBC it's because you own a television which is the most fucking stupid thing I've ever heard of in my life, what's next? A toilet licence?
