I agree it's probably just wishful thinking on my part that he was having a sly dig at refs with the nuances of the English language... although it does seem a bit odd that his only reference to English football in general during the interview was to make a remark about the refs rather than talking about any other aspect of he game.

Yeah I can see why that remark was surprising. Its why I posted about it in the first place, as it was quite unusual. English refs have a reputation for letting more stuff go and maybe he is a player who enjoys the momentum of the english game.

Also interesting how they cut it in the intro so that after he said "I like how the referees control the game", his mrs says "he's a joker isn't he" (or something along those lines)

Only realised he wasn't taking the piss after watch the whole thing and realising they were 2 separate clips

Ha, I never picked up on that. Maybe that was the editor having a bit of fun with the content.
